RIP Weber Kettle, June 4, 1977 - Sept. 3, 2010
My Weber Kettle died tonight. We got it as a wedding present from my then employer and the office staff. There is/was no Crash at the Club tonight, so I was cooking a rib eye (and some burgers to have as leftovers during the week - damn they were good last week!) on my Weber. I had them covered with the dome top, and when I lifted said cover, the grill started to twist counter-clockwise and collapse. One of the three legs gave way. It being very hot from the coals, I had the good sense not to grab at it and try to stop the fall - I am Duke graduate, after all. As it hit the ground, the steak and burgers went flying, followed by both the grill and the coal grid, which both landed on my food. Damn! I uncovered the meat and picked up the steak and put it on a plate. I used tongs to pick up the hot coals from the grass and put them back into the grill bowl as it lay on it's side. I also put the burger remains in there. I took the steak in the house and ran it under running water in the sink to get all the "stuff" off it, be it dirt, grass, coal grit, whatever. After being satisfied the steak was clean, and about half cooked, I put it in the toaster oven to finish broiling it. The meat had enough of the charcoal grilled flavor still left in it so it was good. But my Weber Kettle is dead

That sucks. What made the legs give way? We'll toast to it's long meaty service tomorrow.

I'm not sure why the leg gave out. I think the rivets that held it to the body must have rusted out, but I really didn't look at it close enough (it was too hot and I wanted to get the steak inside). I'll check it out further either tomorrow morning or more likely on Sunday - tomorrow morning I have somewhere else to be at 10:30 !CameronBornAndBred wrote:That sucks. What made the legs give way? Legs can be repaired...my parents kept a smoker alive for another 15 years with various patches to the legs. The initially were broken in one of the many moves for the Army. In all subsequent moves, we paid very close attention to the treatment of said smoker.

Exactly. Weber carries and extensive supply of replacement parts and, as long as the kettle is in good shape, you'll be good to go.YmoBeThere wrote:Legs can be repaired...my parents kept a smoker alive for another 15 years with various patches to the legs. And Weber is a real pleasure with which to deal. Every company should run their Customer Service dept. like Weber.

Isn't a kettle the thing you boil water in?

for a speedy recovery for Weber. ;)

It's 33 years old. Can't you just go get a new one?

Sorry to hear about Weber. for a full recovery, or in lieu of that, replacement. After all, he's been around since Carter was president.

I'm not the one who suggested fixing it... And I certainly wanted to shoot it when it dumped my food. Will diagnose problem and suggest course of action tomorrow. No time now. Gotta hit the road and get to Brunchgate!CathyCA wrote:It's 33 years old. Can't you just go get a new one?

True, but there do the new one's have the same character? They are making new people everyday, doesn't mean we have to get rid of some others...

You're lucky that he doesn't have Cathy as an attorney, you might be facing a malpractice suit!OZZIE4DUKE wrote:Too busy playing golf Sunday and Monday to take a good look at it Maybe tomorrow if I don't have to drive to Savannah and back to pick up a water machine for the GreenNC show on Thursday in Raleigh http://continuingeducation.ncsu.edu/greenNC/ I will be exhibiting at this show if anyone wants to come see. LED Lighting, Air2Water, a new Air Purifier line that I've picked up (some really cool stuff!) and the PowerwoRx equipment. I need to add the air purifier line to the web site. I'll have a big display for the LED's - their company president just had it built and is coming up to display it.bjornolf wrote:You're lucky that he doesn't have Cathy as an attorney, you might be facing a malpractice suit!OZZIE4DUKE wrote:Too busy playing golf Sunday and Monday to take a good look at it Maybe tomorrow if I don't have to drive to Savannah and back to pick up a water machine for the GreenNC show on Thursday in Raleigh http://continuingeducation.ncsu.edu/greenNC/ I will be exhibiting at this show if anyone wants to come see.
