OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!!!!!!!!!!! I loathe censorship.

Post by CameronBornAndBred » July 10th, 2010, 12:53 pm

I hate censorship of all kinds, and over yonder has now been the most recent.
This morning in the Austin Rivers Soon To Be The Longest Ever Thread, I posted a response to Roy White.
(RoyWhite's post) Okay, let's consider this.
Is Austin Rivers really a crucial or even important recruit for Duke?
1. He's made it pretty clear that he plans on playing college basketball for one year only.
2. Without him in the 2011-12 season, wouldn't Duke still have a strong/very strong backcourt?
I said I agreed with this, and then I flat out said that since A.R. has now definitively stated he intends to be one-and-done, I would rather he not come to Duke. I don't want to get attached to a player that is not willing to make an up front commitment to Duke. I ended my reasoning with a personal statement, something similar to "So Austin, I'd rather you play for Kentucky or take your chances with Roy's bus, but I would rather you not come to Duke".

That post is now deleted, by some mystery moderator. No PM to me, no statement in the thread about it. It just silently went away. Grrrrrrrrrrrr. Every now and then I am reminded why I love the openess and freedom we have here on CTN.

By the way, if you haven't seen it, here is the article Austin says he intends to be a one year player.

I had the exact same thought, CB&B. If he's one and done he fits the KY mold perfectly.

I'm sure LOTS of people will disagree with me, I have no problem with that. But to send the post off into the cornfield without notice or reason pisses me off.

I'm surprised you didn't get infracted for it to for being "excessively negative." ~X(

I'd be torn about his/any one-and-done. If K could have one of those every year or two and had a nice mix of other players, meaning upper and lower classmen, that would be OK (not fine, just OK) as long as the staff was comfortable with him being a team player and making the grades in the classroom both semesters and not impacting the schollies, as in "you'd better make progress toward graduation and not affect future squads." It looks like KI is gonna be that type of player and the staff is making provisions for it by looking at a top tier PG for the 2011-12 entering class. I won't say who it is though, will I Ozzie? ;)

At least Irving didn't say up front he only intends to be at Duke one year. Rivers says that is his goal, which to me means he is not commited to anyone but himself. Take that attitude to another school, I will have a very hard time becoming a fan of yours. And in the end, that's what I'm into Duke basketball as..a fan. I want to be able to watch them develop as a team and a player, which right away is an impossibility with Rivers.

The censorship over there boggles the mind sometimes. And their "Its our site so we can do what we want" mantra is tired. They make money from that site (maybe not much but still) and have it openly available on the web so they have to understand that, without its members, it wouldn't exist except as a circle jerk between a chosen few. Personally, I think that circle jerk is what they really want.

I went through a ridiculous amount of bullshit with James and thought things would change after he left but it seems that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

I agree with you CB&B. It didn't hurt us last year missing out on the 1 and done players.

Free speech rules! But only if it's their favorite words in the order they like.

CBB, I admit to a kindred feeling about Mr. Rivers. This attitude works out for whom, precisely? Young Mr. Whatshisface, formerly of Kaintuck, should be so lucky as to not develop some major illness. (although I feel certain any agent worth his commision would package a Lloyd's policy for him) He doesn't have a ring to admire. Without success, now at the highest level, (see little fish - big pond) he'll not see HOF induction either.

I have ambivalent feelings about Austin Rivers. If he's so strongly considering leaving after his first year, I would rather him go play for Coach Cal. I mean, it's not like he needs to go pro to provide for his destitute family....But I would also like to think if he did go pro after his first year, it would be because we were hoisting another banner. :) :ymparty: :duke: :9f:

As for the censorship, BAH! I've been annoyed by the high-handedness over yonder, as well. I've been deleted before, and upbraided for not being on point. My feeling is that if we get off topic, anyone here is more than capable of saying, "getting back to the real topic...." I something happened that I needed to step in, I like to think I would tell you why I deleted your post or why I thought what you said was inappropriate. There's no reason that shouldn't happen over there, as well.

Perhaps James was simply toeing the party line when you had problems with him.

I just can't imagine James being difficult. He is one of my friends in real life--at Duke, online, and when I lived in CA. I think he's a great guy.

One other thought, on the original idea behind the post. Another reason I'm not thrilled about A.R. is that since he is intending only being a one and done, and if he were to choose Duke, how does that affect the class behind him? Here is a team that concievably will have a team built around his offense, and then that experience is gone. Couple that with the likelyhood of Irving being gone that following year as well, and we have a group that has now lost it's core. Had to throw that in there. (Since I threw it in on my original post that got cornfielded).

I think we need a corn smiley.

We've had two different threads today to deal with corn, (moonshine and banishment to the cornfield) and there is not a single corn smiley (that I can locate) on CTN.

We have 18 dancing banana emoticons, but not a single grain of corn to illustrate our posts about corn, cornfields and moonshine. :confusion-helpsos:

While I like the image I found for the cornfield, it was not quite the one I was looking for (or would have chosen for that poster). Here is my favorite.

Definitely wrong to not let you know why the post was deleted, but I think I can guess why they deleted it. My guess is that the personal statement to Austin Rivers was the cause. There have been statements in the past about recruits reading message boards on fan sites and having it influence their decision. I'm sure that, if I was a coach, I'd be frustrated if I lost a recruit due to statements made by fans. It could also go the other way - someone could make promises of special favors to a recruit if they come to School X. That would get School X into some major trouble with the NCAA. Therefore, the moderators have to disallow personal statements, both positive and negative. Either type of statement has the potential to be harmful to the Duke basketball program. Again, a total guess on my part.

Have our coaches ever recruited a player who was openly a one-and-doner? Was John Wall a blatant one-and-doner? Were there others that I'm not thinking of? I know the Calipari model is to stack the team with one-and-doners, but Coach K has shied away from that due to the fact that these players tend to have less of a commitment to the team (Exhibit A: the KY implosion in the tourney).
