Even though she is not a member here, I guess I'll start a thread and keep it updated as we receive reports.
Our daughter, the
one
, left this AM for a nine week DukeEngage funded trip to Mbarara, Uganda. She'll be working on 2 projects: safe/sanitary rainwater harvesting and family planning, all part of a few $ from the Gates Foundation to Duke. She also collected a few $ from some friends and family to work on 2 other small projects while she is there. IDK what they are
. She left RDU about 1 PM, arriving at JFK at 230 PM with about a 3 hour layover before her 6 PM flight to Amsterdam. I think there is about a 5 hour layover prior to her 7-8 flight to Entebbe on Lake Victoria, which looks to be 20 miles south of the capital city of Kampala.
Please keep her in your prayers/thoughts/vibes.

I, too, am adding vibes, thoughts, and prayers (and hugs to DD and MrsDD). What a wonderful opportunity and how awesome to spend her summer helping others - a gift for both parties! Do keep us up to date.

Thanks to all the early well-wishers. Flight from JFK to Amsterdam took off about an hour late but arrival time will only be about 15 minutes late. Must have a very favorable jet stream/tailwind
. She flew from RDU to JFK with no Duke friends but was supposed to meet 2 others at JFK and the whole group of 10-12 is scheduled to be on the flight from Amsterdam to Entebbe, Uganda.
When she proposed/requested permission for this back in March or April, we really had little objection to it as she was not sure she would be hired back at her summer job for the last 3 years, and, even if she was, she wasn't guaranteed full-time for the entire summer. As captmojo said (IIRC), "the opportunity of a lifetime" and it shouldn't cost us more than a few bucks as the program funds it entirely, even with a stipend for incidentals. We are nervous, of course, but very, very excited for her.

Arrived at the Entebbe/Kampala airport on time today at about 730 PM Uganda time with a brief call to Mom and Dad about 3 hours later. They spend the next~36 hours in Kampala, the capital city, until Thursday AM and then head to Mbarara for their projects. We are relieved.

Sounds like it has been a good trip so far, the real adventures should start now that she is there.

Claire's group reached Mbarara and had a day or so of getting acquainted with each other and the city. They are staying in a hostel and they feel safe. They are located adjacent to a 9 hole golf course. Perhaps I should send Oz to visit
. Food consists of a lot of carbs (fruits, veggies and grains) with some meats, including goat. They will be exercising regularly and their work begins Monday or Tuesday. She'll be sending reports every couple days so I shall update CTN as I receive them. Dukediv2012 will be setting up a Skype connection in the very near future for us. He is counting the days until her return
