Online Retailers?

Post by colchar » April 23rd, 2010, 10:19 pm

Now that the Canadian dollar is back on par with the US dollar and is expected to exceed the value of the greenback for the next couple of years, I am thinking it might be worthwhile to buy some stuff I've been wanting from US retailers because Canadian retailers are never quick to pass on the savings from the dollar being worth more than the US dollar. Before I do, however, I was wondering if any of you can recommend reputable retailers who are either online retailers or normal retailers that just happen to have a decent web store?

One of the first things I plan to buy is a watch I've been thinking about for a while so I'd appreciate info on reputable watch/jewelry retailers. I'll be buying another amp for my guitar after that (from a US company as the Canadian distributor of the brand I want is notoriously slow about bringing new product lines into the country) but I think I am familiar with most of the big musical equipment retailers so I am not as worried about that purchase right now. At the moment, my main concern is finding a decent price on the watch I want.

What's the brand of the watch you're looking at? My husband collects vintage watches and has quite a few new watches of quality brands. If you'll pass on the brand, I'll ask him who he deals with, as he has several retailers that he deals with on a regular basis. He doesn't like Rolex all that much; he tends to collect Breitling, Tag Heuer, Omega, and the like.

I'm looking at a Tissot. It is hardly the most expensive watch in the world but it generally costs almost a third to twice as much up here as it does down there and, as a poor grad student, I can put that money to much better use elsewhere.

Here is the model I'm after (not necessarily this colour but definitely this model):

Sharp looking watch. Tissot is a really good brand.

Bruce has several Tissot's. I bought him one locally (Windsor Jewelers-Winston-Salem, NC) for Christmas a couple of years ago. I can't remember where he bought the other couple that he has.

He's at work today; I'll ask him this evening and pass along what he says.

Not gonna be any help. Bruce doesn't have a specific jewelry store for Tissot. He's bought the Tissots that he has at the local store, Windsor Jewelers in Winston-Salem, NC, but their website sucks. (BTW, I looked at the Tissot website and the website they list for Windsor Jewelers in Winston-Salem takes you to a Windsor in New York City, and the website they list for Capital Jewelers in Arlington, VA, takes you to a Capital Jewelers in Carson City, Nevada.) I didn't find any other websites that were helpful. Tissot states that Jared Jewelers sells their watches, but if you look on the Jared website, they don't list Tissot. It's all pretty confusing.

What Bruce did suggest is, if you can come across the border, come across without a watch and buy one in the US, then wear it back across the border so you don't have to worry about customs.(As a prosecutor in Virginia, I am not advocating breaking the law, of course; I am merely passing this along.) Otherwise, he suggested eBay, which to me is sort of scary because you don't know what you're getting.

Sorry I'm no help on this....
