What does everyone think?

* scoring average in double figures all 4 years
* likely to have over 2000 points, 400 assists, 450 rebounds
* 86% free throw shooter, 39% from 3
* ACC All-Freshman Team selection
* 2009 ACC Tournament MVP
* team captain jr and sr years
* possible national honors this year (2nd team AA???)

Unlikely. If he were at carolina, he would have his jersey in the rafters as an "honoree". The number is up there, but can be worn again.

Fine career but no retirement for #30.

It would probably take an NC for that to happen. But the number will definitely be an honored one to wear for somebody in the future. Seems to me that a number could be "cumulatively retired".....that is if it had been distinguished to a certain degree by multiple players I wonder what number would add up to be the most productive over the history of Cameron.

My memory for the older jerseys is a bit foggy but I'd bet 24 or 34.

Jon is a really good player who's putting together a really solid career, but he's not quite in the same stratosphere with the likes of Dick Groat, Art Heyman, Jeff Mullins, Mike Giminski, Grant Hill or Christian Laettner to name a few of the players whose numbers have been retired.

More on Hurley: perhaps the "ouchiest" screen taken by any Duke player in history. Good God. This would have knocked most people out. Many say "Singler is Iron," and he is....but Hurley was by far the toughest Duke player to wear the uniform. Okay, maybe Laettner. But Hurley backed down to no one, though he DID get his bell rung here:

Now back to your regularly scheduled thread about Jon Scheyer's jersey.

JS DOES get his number retired if two things happen:
1) he gets ACC player of the year; and
2) Duke gets into the NCAA finals, largely on his back. One could argue that Duke would have to win for him to be considered.

If both scenarios occur, enough moments will have come through to put him in the elite group.

Don't forget his other qualification for the honor: he caught that flying baby in that Duke Improv video!

Once again, as much as I like/respect Jon as a player and what he has done for Duke, the answer is a resounding highly unlikely. Look at all the other folks and what they accomplished. Most, if not all have one or more of the following attached to their resumes:

1. NPOY (can be NDPOY, too)
2. A "career" record, either at Duke or nationally
3. 1st team AA
4. A NC

Of course, graduation is required, but somehow I am not worried about that one .
There have been numerous discussions on DBR over the last 10 years or so and I think Jon gets "Spanarkel-ed" on this one. Sorry Lavabe/ILJ.
