You're gonna think I'm really, REALLY crazy!

:twitch: I even think I might be really, REALLY crazy. Please, somebody tell me how this can happen. A virus, maybe?

I'm sitting here working on the computer and every once in a while a loud crash of thunder comes from the speakers!!! :jawdrop:

It's a real thunder sound, like a storm.....not just a loud noise. Doesn't matter what program I'm using. Sometimes I don't have any program running. This is no joke. It just started this afternoon. It's random so it makes me jump every single time.

C'mon you gurus, stop laughing now and tell me what you think is up.

I have downloaded a weather alert from weather.com. There is an icon for it in the sys tray at the bottom of the screen (mine is the blue border at the bottom of the screen). When a new weather alert is announced, there is a sound of thunder to alert me to click on the icon and then read the message in the window which opens on the screen.

Do you receive weather alerts? The one for tonight is about flash flood conditions being a significant possibility. Durham County is included in the same alert.

This is why I think the internet is aweswome. Anyone can ask a question, and someone else has an answer due to shared experience.

Seriously though, are you certain a window has not "popped up?" For instance, if a weather window popped up (sometimes they can hide behind other open windows), then it could be making the sound. You would just have to close the pop-up.

If that does not work, have you tried the infamous, "re-boot?"

And if that doesn't work, I recommend the "Mute" function.

Finally, if that doesn't work........911, then................Butner.

P.S. All of the above options can be supllemented with heavy drinking. :)

Well I do have a weather channel icon on my desktop. I clicked on it and it does tell me of the flash flood thingy. Now that I have read it, do you think the thunder will stop, Auntie Em?

PS I agree with you on the fabulousness of the internet. But, it wouldn't be nearly as terrific if you guys weren't the ones on the other end of my cybertelepathy! Everybody is most helpful.....save ONE :joking: who shall remain nameless. He suggested I simply have a few drinks or check into Butner. Fifteen minutes to tip off. GO DUKE! We gotta have this one!

I have the same software. The thunder of which you speak has woken me up in the middle of the night on more than one occasion. It will stop after you've read it, but it will also periodically recur when it refreshes itself, as well as after you reboot. If you click on the icon in your system tray, the window will open up and you'll see a link for settings in the upper right. Click that, and then on the main tab, uncheck the box labeled "Play alert sounds."
Problem solved.

I dunno...I mean, think about it...just a couple of days ago, sans my expertise, you didn't know how to turn off the mysterious thunder sound on your computer or how to recognize/describe good dope. I'm so glad to be of such meritorious service.
