Chemical spill here at the beach

Post by CameronBornAndBred » January 12th, 2010, 10:24 am

Downtown Morehead City is closed and being evacuated due to a chemical spill at the state port. Apparently 9 containers containing an explosive material were punctured. We could have fireworks in January.

Not cool. How did nine containers get punctured at the same time? Has anyone uttered the phrase "terrorist attack?"

The noon news interviewed the mayor of Morehead City. He didn't say how or why the contaniners were punctured, but everything is contained. The material is question is the same explosive as the underwear bomber was using (PETN?). Residents have been asked to voluntarily evacuate, but it is not mandatory. Hazmat teams from the local military base(s) are on the scene and another team is on the way from Raleigh.

Here's a link on PETN. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/de ... -explosive Interestingly, the mayor used the same explosive capability/potency in his on air explanation - 100g can destroy a car.

Our favorite quote of the day..from USA Today..
"Everybody is going about their business," said Hall, 27 who has lived in Morehead City her whole life and does not remember a similar incident. "Why get nervous? Things happen. You can't freak out in times like this. If you freak out, you're going to go down."

Is it because the explosives are on a freak-out timer?

There was an earthquake in Haiti today..the following is a quote from an article on MSN.
"Everybody is just totally, totally freaked out and shaken," said Henry Bahn, a visiting official with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. "The sky is just gray with dust."
I guess that means they are going down....

Now we know how it happened. I suggest a thorough background check on the driver...
Morehead City, N.C. — Nine drums filled with an explosive compound were punctured by a forklift early Tuesday as they were being unloaded at the state port in Morehead City, prompting officials to close the port.

Morehead City Mayor Jerry Jones Jr. said the 50-kilogram drums contained pentaerythritol tetranitrate. Also known as PETN, the material is used in plastic explosives and as a drug to treat heart conditions.

Thanks...it's been more an inconvienence than anything because Beaufort and all points down east were basically cut off (and still are until tomorrow). You gotta admire the crews that go in and clean up something like that knowing that anytime they could be blown to smithereens. I'm betting if it were in the heat of the summer it would have been a mandatory evacuation and a much riskier operation.

Yeah, send some prayers for Haiti, specifically St. Joseph's home for boys and Wings of Hope. Those are the two orphanages I have visited on both of my trips. My Dad keeps in close contact with all of them and even runs the Hearts With Haiti website. www.heartswithhaiti.com

Apparently there was some serious structural damage to St. Josephs (a 7-story building). One of our very good friends, Bill Nathan (the famous drummer and probably the genuine best person I know) was injured climbing out of the wreckage. The earthquake hit when he was preparing for evening prayer in the Chapel (on the 5th floor). As far as we know none of the kids were injured or killed, thank God, and Wings of Hope (the house for mentally and physically handicapped children) was fine except for some minor structural damage.

It's heartbreaking because they had JUST finished some new renovations to celebrate their 25th anniversary (January 24th or 25th)...

This is quite a relief to hear. I thought when I first read this it would be that one of CB&B's fermenting tanks had developed a massive leak and his latest homebrew would have to be declared an environmental hazard.
