With all the Avatar discussion lately, I was wondering what y'all thought of the announcement that ESPN will be launching a new channel, ESPN 3-D. They will be showing college football and basketball games, including the BCS championship next year, as well as World Cup soccer.

Even more exciting is that the HDTV I bought two years ago is 3D Ready!

I remember when ESPN very first started thought how the network itself was the stupidest thing ever...who is going to find enough sports to fill 24 hours? Since then, they have revolutionized sports viewing as we know it. I think they are about to do it again.

I think it could be REALLY cool...or REALLY stupid. Where do I get my glasses?

I vote for DukeUsulgates whenever a Duke game is on ESPN 3-D.

My HD 'jumbotron' as we call it is 3D ready as well. I'm thinking it could be cool - but will reserve judgement until I actually see it.
Wasn't it ESPN that was the first to do the yellow first down line on the field? I remember thinking that was the coolest thing...
On the otherhand that digital hockey puck that left a trail as it zipped around was annoying as hell.
I hope 3D is cool. I hope TV programming doesn't start doing the stupid 3D gimmick crap that most 3D movies have. I hope I get to see Tarholes weeping on the bench having been upset in the first round of the tournament for the third straight year in Glorious 3D

That was FOX, not ESPN.

I think this could be a really cool idea.
Unfortunately I see myself preferring normal broadcasts... Although I can't say that for certain because I haven't seen this 3-D deal.
WOAH.
This means you could see me in 3-D next year when I'm a Crazie!

How do I enable 3D mode on the "3D-Ready" DLP and "3D-Ready" Plasma HDTVs?
(i) Plug a device which creates checkerboard pattern (at the native resolution of the display) into the "HDMI 3" input on the 3D-HDTV (this may be a different numbered socket on some displays - check the manual). For the moment, this device will likely be a PC with a DVI video card, a DVI to HDMI cable, and appropriate 3D software.
(ii) Plug a pair of LCS 3D glasses which support the VESA 3-pin mini-DIN connector into the "3D-Sync" connector on the 3D-HDTV. One example of such a pair of glasses is this one: Wireless 3D Gaming Glasses
(iii) switch the display to "HDMI 3" (by pressing the source button) (this may be a different numbered socket on some displays - check the manual), and then press the "3D" button on the remote.
That sounds like a lot of crap to plug in...for one pair of glasses.
