Video (DVD) Conversion Software?

As part of his Christmas, my brother and I bought our Dad a DVD set of his favourite Scottish soccer team's championship season last year. The info provided before we ordered said that the discs were Region code 0 which we took to mean they could be played anywhere in the world. When we tried to play them in Mom and Dad' DVD player, however, they wouldn't work - although they will work in my DVD player.

What I would like to do is copy these discs and, while doing so, convert them to the North American region code. Does anyone know of any good (and preferably free) software with which I can do this? Ideally, I would like to be able to copy the entire DVD without having to fart around with individual files so I am hoping to find software that will copy the disc, convert it, and then burn it onto a blank DVD.

Colchar - what kind of DVD player did you buy? Some players can be "hacked" using special command sequences from the remote control to switch regions or play all regions.

I frequently use DVDFab (http://www.dvdfab.com) to make copies of my dvd's - I have 2 kids (8 and 5) who can't be trusted with originals....

It's not free, but if you'd like I may be able to dig up a 'trial' copy for you....

I can't remember which model my parents have but I do remember that it is a JVC model. I'll ask them for the model and will check to see if there is a hack code for it.

Take a look at this article. Though I'm not sure if it's going to help, especially since you said the DVD has region code 0. The issue might be PAL vs. NTSC, in which case you can use encoding software to change it. Good luck.

Not totally sure - normally I just make copies of disks but I'll check out my install of it and post back. meant to do that last night but I got involved in some sporting event....
