Electrical question #1

Post by Lavabe » December 20th, 2009, 7:10 pm

What does it mean when you get a dead fish smell coming from a ceiling light fixture?
NOTE: Please resist the obvious jokes that can come from that question.
The smell comes and goes.
Thanks.

Could be coming from wire insulation.

Great. Will try to get an electrician to come over tomorrow to investigate. It's clearly out of my can-do list.
Thanks.

Well now, I've learned something new today. Did not know there could be a dead fish smell emanating from a ceiling light fixture.

Awesome! I googled around after reading your post and came across the following post on aparmenttherapy.com:
This can be an electrical problem. I had an unidenfiable fish smell in my house. Apparently some wiring (especially in old homes) will give off this smell when it overheats- check your lights and othe electrical devices. or better yet call an electrician.
Very cool! Learn something new everyday.

Interesting article.... I was also thinking disposal and possible dead rodent ..... lemons are excellent for disposal and there are also little lemon balls that you can drop down there while running HOT water and then turn on and walla you have lemon fragrance throughout your kitchen. Now for the possible dead rodents, "not sure I can relate to them smelling like fish", but they do stink! Rodents for me are like bugs, if I see them or smell them (which is a rare occurrence) then I will just about gut the space (god forbid we are talking about the kitchen) to make it clean again...... I can't stand bugs or rodents! ;) :-t X(

The electrician we had come over never heard of this before.

Did he find a problem of any sort?

If you got an electrician to come to your house for only $30, and he found nothing, you got your money's worth. That is both serious and a joke.

I've never seen your wires. I live in a house that is a 'war boom' house, and I'm not talking about the 2nd world war...rather,the first one, the great one. WWI.
I have smelled this condition. Of course, that doesn't mean it is the cause of the trouble you describe, but it is a condition that does exist. I'm not an electrician, but I know a few and they have heard of this.I was told that I was close to the temperature limit of the wire for the fixture.

The problem is now resolved. And, I am sad to say, it had NOTHING to do with an electrical issue.

It was our dog's inflamed anal gland. :O3

How did the dog's inflamed anal glands get close to the ceiling light fixture?
