Not far from us (Efland, NC), is a group of houses, most familys are related. They compete with each other, decorating their yards at Christmas. It is so much fun to view every year. There will always be new additions to 1 or more houses each year.

The town of Meadow,NC, is said to be a great place to see lots of lights & decorations. Our youngest daughter & her family tell me its be best they have ever seen. Meadow is off I40. Heading South, the exit is the first one after the intersection where I40 and I95 met. I hope to see them this year.

When I lived in San Antonio as a kid, there was a suburb across town that had a rather large neighborhood where EVERYONE decorated to the nines. They lined their sidewalks with big light up candy canes, they decorated their outdoor trees, their windows, their doors, their bushes. It was like driving into Santa's village. Cars would line up for MILES, some people coming from several hundred miles away, just to see this neighborhood. It was famous. It was like cruising back in the '50s. Everybody would line up and just drive through the neighborhood at two miles an hour. I think they had certain rules, like everybody had to have the same candy canes on their paths, but it was amazing to look at. You could see the glow a couple miles before you got there.

It appears from the pictures that they're not as homogenized as they used to be, but they clearly still decorate like crazy.

Meadow is about 20 minutes south of Smithfield, and we've been down there once in 30 years, just because we "had to see it once". It is very nice. Not overwhelming "I've got to go back again", but very nice.

The exit past (east) of I-95 is NC Hwy 96.

Oh yeah man, I feel for you. I did McAdenville once, now I avoid it like the plague.

There are several neighborhoods in Winston-Salem where it seems as if every house is beautifully decorated..... some are fanciful, others bordering on the line between good taste and gaudy, but most just beautiful. Many homes have a Moravian (Advent) Star lit on the front porch or wherever it can be easily seen. My family usually takes a driving tour on Christmas Eve enjoying the beautiful displays.

Speaking of lights, the Festival of Lights at Tanglewood is a really spectacular display that takes months to assemble. We drive through every 3-4 years to see what's been added.
