Chucking Wood

The famous line in the rhyme asks, "How much would could a Woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?"

Admitting ignorance, I have two key questions regarding this (don't want to Google it):

1. Is there even such a creature as a Woodchuck? (Lavabe?)

2. Exactly what is meant by "chuck wood?" I, EarlJam, have always associated "chucking" with A) Throwing or B) Throwing Up.

For whatever reason, rational or irrational, the first creature that comes to mind when I think "woodchuck," is a beaver. And, in the given context, I associate "chucking" with a beaver gnawing on wood. Hence, the answer to the question of "how much wood could a woodchuck chuck," would likely be given as a volume or weight measurement, with the "chucked" substance consisting largely of a sawdust-like material.

Anyone else see it this way? I, EarlJam, am of course open for differing interpretations. Please discuss.

Thanks,

-EJ

All I know is that a woodchuck could chuck all the wood he would chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood.

Yes, a woodchuck is a groundhog, which are also called whistle-pigs, oddly.

There's a funny article on it at Wiki: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_much_wood ... chuck_wood
My favorite part is this:
"How Chuck Norris got involved-A woodchuck would only chuck as much would as Chuck Norris would allow it to, because the woodchuck shares Chuck's name. Therefore, Chuck must punish it and make it chuck as much wood as Chuck can. So, a woodchuck would chuck as much wood as Chuck could."

This article on Yahoo Answers has some funny responses. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index ... 811AAhLLhy
Here's my favorite:
"- What exactly is meant by 'chuck wood'? Does this mean to toss sticks? Does it mean to eat wood? How about 'regurgitate wood'? I guess then what you really want to know is how much wood can a woodchuck eat before it is violently ill? And wouldn't the woodchuck risk getting splinters in it's esophagus?
Should we really be encouraging bulemic behavior in our woodland creatures? don't they have it hard enough, what with global warming and deforestation?
We should be ashamed of ourselves."

My best guess from the article is that "chucking" is the act of throwing through the legs as when digging, since they talk about the woodchuck digging through the earth to make a burrow, and thus "chucking" the dirt. I guess if there were a rotted log in the ground he had to dig through, a woodchuck would be chucking some wood.

I also thought that chucking meant to throw as in "Jake Delhomme just chucked the ball to another team's player. Again."
