The famous line in the rhyme asks, "How much would could a Woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?"

Admitting ignorance, I have two key questions regarding this (don't want to Google it):

1. Is there even such a creature as a Woodchuck? (Lavabe?)

2. Exactly what is meant by "chuck wood?" I, EarlJam, have always associated "chucking" with A) Throwing or B) Throwing Up.

For whatever reason, rational or irrational, the first creature that comes to mind when I think "woodchuck," is a beaver. And, in the given context, I associate "chucking" with a beaver gnawing on wood. Hence, the answer to the question of "how much wood could a woodchuck chuck," would likely be given as a volume or weight measurement, with the "chucked" substance consisting largely of a sawdust-like material.

Anyone else see it this way? I, EarlJam, am of course open for differing interpretations. Please discuss.

Chucking? I always thought that is throwing. Can a woodchuck chuck? Never seen it happen. Anyone out there know if a woodchuck can chuck?

All I know is that a woodchuck could chuck all the wood he would chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood.

My best guess from the article is that "chucking" is the act of throwing through the legs as when digging, since they talk about the woodchuck digging through the earth to make a burrow, and thus "chucking" the dirt. I guess if there were a rotted log in the ground he had to dig through, a woodchuck would be chucking some wood.

I also thought that chucking meant to throw as in "Jake Delhomme just chucked the ball to another team's player. Again."
