Donny Osmond
Donny Osmond won "Dancing With the Stars" last night.
On the show, he sang PUPPY LOVE.
There ought to be a law.

I concur. Can't he just disappear into anonymity?Lavabe wrote:Donny Osmond won "Dancing With the Stars" last night.

Re: Donny Osmond
You guys may not be interested in seeing Donnie on TV, but some of us women still like to see him.
I love to see people who are living well with aging. There is something affirming about seeing a well known person who's aging well and enjoying the current stage of life. With society and businesses (retail particularly) so focused on adolescents, how refreshing to see someone at least 50 yo successful on camera. The fact that he can still sing is a pleasant contrast to some of the offerings in today's music industry.
If you're not at least 50 yet, you may not understand any of this!!!!

Re: Donny Osmond
I was thrilled that Donny won.
As soon as he was announced as the winner, he ran to his wife, Debbie, and brought her up on the stage with him. THAT is why I love Donny Osmond so much. He is one classy gentleman.
Did I mention that he signed my lunch box?

Re: Donny Osmond
The issue at hand is that 30+ years after singing a tune, a sickingly sweet teeny-bopper tune, he tried singing it again... and it was CRIMINALLY BAD.
Ray Davies tried singing YOU REALLY GOT ME on Letterman the other night. ALSO, NOT good.
There should be a law. You know, in 4 more years, David Lee Roth should not be singing JUMP. The 30 year rule should be enforced.
However, I agree that Donny danced well.

Tell that to the Rolling Stones and a bunch of other bands that are touring around for the big bucks.

Re: Donny Osmond
Point of clarification: Ray Davies first sang that tune 45 years ago! And although he sang well in spots the other night, it just didn't work well (then again, having a 30 person chorus doing backup might have ruined it too).YmoBeThere wrote:Lavabe wrote:The issue at hand is that 30+ years after singing a tune, a sickingly sweet teeny-bopper tune, he tried singing it again... and it was CRIMINALLY BAD.

Anyone who appears on a PBS fundraising concert to appeal to aging baby boomers to donate ... should reconsider singing a song they did 30-40+ years ago. e.g., The Moody Blues. Eric Burdon. Just stop.
Ymo may be right. There may be an exception or two. The Boss? Mick? Beats me. But a 50+ Donny Osmond singing a teen heartthrob song was WAY out there... and almost creepy. IMHO.

Re: Donny Osmond
Just remember that Donny probably didn't select the song he sang. He sang what the producers gave him to sing, a song that obviously the choreographer liked. ;)Lavabe wrote:Point of clarification: Ray Davies first sang that tune 45 years ago! You may have thought it was criminally bad, but I would love to be in lock-up with Donny Osmond serenading me.Lavabe wrote:The issue at hand is that 30+ years after singing a tune, a sickingly sweet teeny-bopper tune, he tried singing it again... and it was CRIMINALLY BAD.

Puppy Love was released in 1971. It's been 38 years.

Do you know which day in 1971? I'm trying to determine whether it or I is older.CathyCA wrote:You may have thought it was criminally bad, but I would love to be in lock-up with Donny Osmond serenading me.Lavabe wrote:The issue at hand is that 30+ years after singing a tune, a sickingly sweet teeny-bopper tune, he tried singing it again... and it was CRIMINALLY BAD.

Probably late in 1971. The 7 inch single was released in 1971. Puppy Love was also included on the album "Portrait of Donny" which was released in 1972. The song didn't chart until 1972, when it hit #3 on Billboard.YmoBeThere wrote:Do you know which day in 1971? Re: Donny Osmond
I disagree; vocally, he sounded fine, and I liked the choral reworking of the tune. I confess, I may be a little biased because a friend of mine was in the choir, but I've also sung in choral arrangements of pop/rock tunes and sometimes enjoy turning a song into something different. It's just not going to be everyone's cup of tea.Lavabe wrote:Point of clarification: Ray Davies first sang that tune 45 years ago!
