Check out this article, lists the most and least reliable of laptops.

The HP stat surprised me, I like Compaq a lot, and HP owns them now. They don't review Compaq separately, I wish they would specify if they are including them.

I ALWAYS buy the warranty on laptops. I know people think warranties are a scam, but laptop parts are expensive to replace, hard to replace, and always seem to go. Desktop PCs are easy to deal with HW failures, so I never buy warranties for them.

I own a Toshiba which came in second by 0.1% so I think I'll be fine.

Don't tell my little Dell that. He's been plugging away for over five years now. Don't jinx him.

> The least reliable brands? Acer, Gateway, and HP. HP's hardware malfunction rate, the worst in SquareTrade's analysis, is a whopping 25.6 percent.
Just great. My netbook is an Acer and my (wife's) laptop is a Gateway (that's the one I dropped 2 years ago when it was almost new and AmEx paid for the repair).
But with netbooks (usually Acer and HP) being <$350, who can really complain about having to get a new one every couple of years. Just be sure your data is backed up - PM me for a referral to Carbonite so I can get 3 months free for the referral. At $55/year, it's a great bargain. I'm so glad I had it when my desktop died last spring. Everything restored perfectly the day I got my new computer.

I just got a new laptop to replace my 15" MacBook Pro. It was a great computer except for a minor flaw, thanks to Nvidia, that prevented power from getting to the display. It was less than three years old. I'm a big fan of warranties, especially for laptops.

I'm on my second Toshiba Satellite. Burned out the monitor on the first one after 3 years. Rest of the computer still works fine.

Get off it, or you'll break that screen, too!

Unfortunately, IMHO, HP bought Compaq to improve their name, but still struggling. HP isn't doing to bad, but never quite got the integration of compaq into their cheap ass equipment! I too liked compaq in the desktop and small-mid server line. HP should have stuck to their fine line of HPUX boxes and improving that, rather than diversifying (again IMHO). Sort of like when IBM back in the 80's broke something that didn't need fixing and then got them selves in a pinch, because Compaq got it and the advent of the clone market began! IBM was totally solid, until PS2 then it all went to shit!

Funny, IBM wasn't even in the Bar charts, does that mean they are actually still making thinkpads that are worthy of buying! I divested myself from them about 10 years ago, but miss them.... something always makes go back to my roots... believe it or not, I still have the 1st IBM PC they made that I upgraded many times... I remember when a 10MB(full size) hard disk and then a 20MB (1/2 height) was the thing to have! I could make that PC humm with the programs I wrote back then managing the devices and memory the way things were supposed to be managed, rather than slopping them together! Macro Assembler was awesome!

Lenovo bought the Thinkpad line a few years ago. They still make some of them in the RTP buildings, which they bought (lease?) from IBM too. They also make some of them in China, their home country.

I've had to have warranty repair on this Dell Vostro twice - motherboard needing replacing each time.
Won't be buying another dell.
I had a Toshiba tablet that held up under 3+ years of serious abuse; a thinkpad that survived 2 years of B-school in an unpadded backpack; and now at work, a Lenovo Thinkpad tablet that takes a licking and keeps on ticking. (I've dropped it so that it's cracked the case corners, twice, and it's still fine.) I'll be giving either of these companies my money next, when it comes time to get my next machine - a multi-touch laptop!

Speaking of serious abuse, one of my friends, the mom of one of my son's friends, has a Dell laptop that was sitting on her kitchen counter, open. The cabinet above it, full of dishes, gave out and fell on it. It's fine, except that the escape key it gone. It still works, you just have to push the little sensor that used to be UNDER the key. Now THAT'S surviving abuse. ;)

Dell keeps our repair shop in business.
