Duke vs Miami

Post by Devil in the Blue Dress » November 18th, 2009, 5:55 pm

The games seem to get tougher and tougher as we move through November.

The spirit and tenacity of this year's Duke team is a real contrast to the recent past. A friend on the way to a recent men's basketball game ran into Vince Oghobaase who was headed to Cameron. Vince's attitude was that the season's not over for this team. He wasn't just throwing around the sort of sports talk so many use meaninglessly, but rather projected strong positive thinking based in great confidence in the team. This team's still thinking about and working on ways to win.....

I've been thinking that their attitude and self-confidence have changed so much, and it's great to hear that that definitely is the case. People who still joke about Duke Football are way behind the times. Go Devils!

We're beat up for the game, Vince, Boyette and Johnny Williams are out, but Kromah is expected to play. Miami is one reciever down due to injury, so that helps a touch. If we throw vertical, it should be a fun game. If we throw horizontal again, not so much. Looking forward to it, would love to see Thad finally get his victory against his home town..he's come so close.

Despite various disappointments along the way, Thad is completing a remarkable college career over the next few weeks.... or whenever it ends. He's been setting records game by game this year and moving up in various categories of performance not only in Duke's records, but also the ACC's records. We're quite fortunate to have the opportunity to witness his successes.

Cutcliffe told Bob that this week has been the best week of preparation they've had this year. He says the game all hinges on execution of the plays. I hope we execute as well as we've prepared..GO DUKE!

Kevin White is being interviewed, and he is talking about the crowd that's expected...which is squat. He says Miami is worried about the 20-25,000 that is expected. Those numbers even look weak in Wade..just expect how they will look in a pro stadium. Takes the home field advantage out of the equation quite a bit.

Thad got to sleep in his own bed...that's pretty cool. I bet mom was happy to have him home. I wonder if Vernon and Varner got to do the same, or if it's a senior privelege.

Duke seems to have gotten into the offensive rhythm in the second quarter and the defense is doing so many great things despite missing players with injuries.... Miami's having all sorts of problems including some caused by the Duke defense!!!!

We seem to be missing out on a LOT of opportunities for turnovers in this game. I didn't see ALL of them, but the play by play guy said we'd missed out on about five. We need to take advantage of those if we want to win this game. Great effort on both sides of the ball during the first half though. Keep it up, guys.

What a wonderful thing: we've missed some opportunities, but we're still in the game and doing a great job of managing the clock. The defense today is doing a great job. Our guys seem to be handling the heat and humidity better than Miami is.

A tough loss! In the brief post game portion, Coach Cutcliffe said he wanted the listeners at home to know that the best team didn't win today. It was clear he was very unhappy with those calls late in the game.

Thad passed Ben Bennett for career yardage in the game. Bless his heart, he played with an injury that continues to plague him. In the last few series of the game, he seemed to be almost dragging his left leg. It was clear that he was going to do everything he could to play so that Sean Schroeder's red shirt status wouldn't be burned.

Great young man.

We got hosed. We really, really got hosed by those :swear: refs. Twice. On consecutive plays.

What devildeac said. I haven't seen officiating that bad since the Arkansas-Florida game that the refs handed to Florida on a couple of ridiculous calls. That crew was suspended by the SEC for a month when the conference officials reviewed game tape and saw how badly it had been botched. Would be nice if the ACC would make a similar move.

As we've sometimes said in basketball games, "yea, the refs screwed us, but if we'd put them away like we should have, it wouldn't have mattered." The commentators were saying that we missed out on at least 6 turnovers, some of which ended in Miami points, others of which would have put us in GREAT field position to score ourselves. Our defense played well for most of the game, but you CAN'T afford not to take advantage of at least half of those opportunities, if not 3/4. We're not good enough yet to leave those on the field and still beat an athletic team like Miami. We're getting there, guys, but it's still a work in progress.

I agree about the poor performance by the officials! Bob Harris commented that Coach Cutcliffe could have a large box of film to send to the ACC headquarters.

No matter what else one takes away from this game, Thad's performance is mighty remarkable. He played an heroic game at Miami. That deep thigh bruise from the closing late hits on November 7 continues to plague him. Coach Cutcliffe said that a major sign of improvement was when Thad was able to get into his car Thursday morning before the game.
