I just came back from seeing the nurse. The infected area around the wound is worse - she thinks some of the discharge from the wound might be particularly acidic and that it is burning the surrounding tissue. She thought I should go to the hospital but we eventually agreed that I would see how it felt tomorrow and then decide. If I can make it through tomorrow I will see my family doctor on Monday.

The nurse also thinks that I need intravenous antibiotics. She said they would administer those in the emergency room and then either send a nurse to my house every day or, more likely, send me to the wound care clinic that I am already attending and have them fit me with a pump that will control the antibiotics. She figures I would need to be on that for several weeks.

So I'll see how I do today and how I am tomorrow and will then decide whether to go to the hospital or just wait to see my family doctor.

Continued vibes and prayers and good wishes, Colchar.

Don't hesitate to go to the hospital if it doesn't improve quickly.

I second that! This is NOT going to get better by itself. To the ER with you first thing tomorrow! No more fooling around! You need to consult with an infectious disease specialist ASAP if this is going the wrong direction. You've fooled around with this long enough, kiddo.

We went through the IV antibiotics routine. They insert a pic line and you can administer the meds through that yourself. It's not hard. Get thee to the hospital. Now!
Love, Ima

Sure sounds like you have some form of necrotizing fasciitis (translation: tissue destroying infection involving much, much more than just the skin) AND osteomyelitis (translation: bone infection). Get your stubborn ass to the hospital :-* :ymhug: . You need IV antibiotics and potential wound debridement by a surgeon and a bone scan or MRI.

The good doc knows whereof he speaks. Probable surgery in your future. Get on it now!

A morning update - it hurts as bad this morning as it did yesterday so I don't think I have any choice other than to go to the hospital. I'll grab something to eat (just some cereal or something) and will then call my Dad to drive me over there.

I'll check back in when I can to let you all know how I am doing.

Hey everyone...so I went into the hospital this morning. The nurse doing the admitting sent me right into the urgent care clinic. When the doctor looked at the ulcer he said he didn't like the look of it and ordered up intravenous antibiotics. He didn't order an MRI or anything but I am seeing my family doctor tomorrow afternoon and he will do that.

The E.R. doctor said he wanted to deal with the infection with antibiotics for the moment so, after they gave me this afternoon's dose, they arranged for a nurse to come to the house every day for the next week. I still have the I.V. thing in my arm and the nurse coming tonight will be hooking me up to an I.V. pump that will control the antibiotics. I am on two different antibiotics at the same time and the pump will control both of them. The pump is held in a fanny-pack type thing so I will be stuck wearing that for the next week. Thankfully, the only place I have to go in that time is my doctor's office tomorrow otherwise I'd look a right twat walking around with a fanny-pack L-) That nurse will also clean and dress the wound each day.

The E.R. doctor said that, once I am off the intravenous antibiotics, I will have to go back on antibiotic pills for the foreseeable future but that my family doctor can assess the situation and decide which ones to put me on. So I guess I will see him this coming Friday as well.

I was previously having the dressing changed every second day but he wants it done every day. Once I am done with the home visits from the nurse, I will be going into the wound care clinic each day.

The nurse who administered the I.V. in the hospital and who packed and redressed the wound said that, if the antibiotics work, I should start to see at least a little bit of improvement after about 24hrs so I am really really hoping that she is right about that.

They also prescribed Percocet for the pain so I am hoping that that does a better job than the Tylenol #3 that I was using. Actually, it usually didn't do squat and the E.R. doctor said they were ineffective for this kind of issue.

So now I am just sitting waiting for the supplies that the E.R. doctor ordered to be delivered by the pharmacy and for the nurse to show up. At least I am half-baked on Percocet though :D
