Ditto on the thanks/shout out/kudos/applause to The Love Ninja for the theme and the hosting of the event. I had 6 different beers throughout the week, trying 2 brand new ones and re-visiting 4 old favorites and had a great time in the process, especially during Zoom Virtual Pub yesterday. Plus, happily, whatever occurred in the Zoom room stays in the Zoom room. :ymdevil:

From Virtual Pub yesterday:

Grande Réserve (most commonly known as Chimay Blue)-brewed at Scourmont Abbey and bottled at Bières de Chimay

Another world class beer that intimidates me.

Local? Not really...

Credit-Virtual Pub theme and a couple extra bucks on my credit card
Style-Dark, strong Belgian ale
Format-330 ml bottle (less bièr so less chance of wanton drunkenness )
Stemware-large wine glass
Appearance-hazy dark brown with a fizzy, yet creamy, voluminous head
Nose-earthy; dark fruits and brown sugar
Mouthfeel-rich and famous
Tastes-dates, raisins, figs, plums, dark brown sugar syrup, earth, cherries, chocolate, dark rum and booze
Adjuncts-likely dark Belgian candi sugar and wheat
IBU-doesn't matter
ABV-9% (frighteningly smooth)
Overall impression-simply an amazing bier; highly complex aromas and flavors
Ymm, Beer rating-near the top of cat 3; another desert island beverage at about $2/bottle more than a buncha other high quality beverages and worth it

Jack O'-Sam Adams/Boston Beer Company

Credit-the guy who was lit yesterday during Virtual Pub; thanks!
Style-pumpkin wheat ale
Format-12 ounce bottle
Stemware-Sam Adams White Ale glass
Appearance-medium amber with a smallish, off white head
Nose-spices
Mouthfeel-spicy
Tastes-cinnamon, nutmeg, "other spices ," and orange
Adjuncts-cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon peel , and "other spices"
IBU-maybe 30
ABV-4.4% (wait, was this pie or beer?
Overall impression-average; will not yell/cuss at the giver
Ymm, Beer rating-mid cat 2; good pairing with a maple turkey breast and American cheese sammich moments ago

Watched In Bruges again tonight with an Ommegang Tripel. It really pops on blu ray. Such a gorgeous movie with good humor. I do want to see that swan. Dark and disturbing at times, but cool 2nd chance theme underlying.

Vallar Dohaeris - Ommegang - 5.3% - Belgian Tripel -

From their beer series inspired by Game of Thrones.

Bright, effervescent, golden pour. Peppery flavor to start, vanilla yeast, malt, ripe apple, and subtle cotton candy.

High Category 2 Belgian. Extremely enjoyable and I wouldn't object to a low Cat 3 rating. :obscene-drinkingcheers:

The swans are real, and they have a story:

Once upon a time, back in the 15th century, the city of Bruges was prosperous and flourishing and it was known far beyond the borders as a lovely place to live. Moreover because it was famous back then for its fairs and festivities held all year round.

In the year 1482, Flanders and with it Bruges fell under the county of Maximilian From Austria, who had heard about the fame of Bruges and wasn’t very fond of the rampant mentality of its inhabitants. He imposed a law that prohibited all festivities, including the annual fair and other important festivals to the people of Bruges. Known for their fierceness, the citizens revolted and they started riots all over town, burning houses and killing envoys and sympathisans of emperor Maximilian. Finally they captured Maximilian in 1488 and locked him away in the house ‘Craenenburg’. You can still see the house on the Main Market Square.

Because the emperor still wouldn’t give in to the demand of the the citizens to annul the law, they captured Maximilians’ head squire and best friend Langhals (‘long neck’) and beheaded him with a guillotine in Maximilians sight, right beneath the house where he was held captive. Aghast by this deed, the emperor finally gave in. But he didn’t give up without a fight…

Maximilian decided to impose an eternal punishment on the city of Bruges. His best friend Langhals, who was highly important to the emperor, had a symbol of a swan on his escutcheon. As a tribute to his friend he made the people of Bruges promise that they would take care of 101 white swans for eternity. If they failed to do so, Bruges would fall in decay, never to be able to hold its head above water again… And yes, today the beautiful white swans are still there today.

I don't know this beer (what else is new-there are likely 50K other beers with which I'm unfamiliar, too :-o ) but that ABV is in the singel/blonde/standard golden category and not in the tripel range. :-?

It was large format so I was able to tripel it with the 3rd glass.

Love the photos and story OPK! Sounds like the folks in Bruges didn't want another lockdown. ;)

Pretty sure there was a good defenestration or two as part of the story as told to me.

The tower Maximillian was locked in is in the same square where the bell tower Is, and the outdoor pubs are when Ken and Harry have their beer.
