She's 91, has scoliosis and, after an MRI, is showing signs of a twisted stomach.
I have no idea what to expect. If this diagnosis is true, I think that with her age and other condition, they may be very hesitant on what procedures to follow ahead with.

Can anyone here offer insight?

I'm gonna spend the morning trying to make sure all her personal affairs are in order.

Ninety-one you say? You must have been taking very good care of her so far! Bet she's proud to have ya! And vice versa. Keep us posted. I never heard of a twisted stomach. That must make for real difficulty with digestion. Liquid diet -- bleh. Hug her for us all!

My sister talked with mom's doctors this week and got some encouraging news. First, there's some disagreement between the neuropsychologist and neurologist regarding the FTD diagnosis. The neurologist still thinks Mom shows more signs of having a stroke based upon what he's seen in her file. He won't be seeing her until May, so we'll have to wait until then to get his final answer. Also, the neuropsychologist says that Mom is still too sharp to call it dementia at this point - in other words, she's still in the early stages if it is FTD. So, the field is narrowed a bit to early stages of FTD or a stroke. Based on what I've read (from the website that bluebutton recommended), I can make arguments for both possibilities. We'll just have to be patient and see how it all plays out while proceeding with helping as much as we can.

My mom had an appointment with the neurologist today, and we got an unexpected potential diagnosis out of left field: ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Apparently it presents somewhat similarly to FTD. The neurologist doesn't think it's ALS - if it is, it's a mild form. He's doing some sort of test on Friday to rule it out. Guess we'll know more then.

Continued vibes, please!

How severe are her symptoms? Have her meds helped? I hope she's still enjoying things and having lots of good days. Meanwhile you guys are still on my vibes list. Please do keep us aware of new developments. It sure sounds like you have a good team on the job. You troupers all really hang together.

Love, Ima

Thanks for the vibes, everyone!

Mom had another appointment today. The doctors said that Mom's memory is excellent and she's very sharp. The only problems are with communication and higher order thinking/decision making. My understanding (and maybe bluebutton can clarify) is that 70 yrs old is a somewhat late diagnosis for FTD. We also caught it early, I think. The only question at this point is how rapidly it will progress. She's not on any medication yet, Ima; they're planning to start her on Aricept after they perform the test to rule out ALS. The doctors were very positive and supportive and stressed that she has lots of strengths and she should keep working on those areas where she does have strengths in order to keep her brain active. Mom is musical, so one of the ideas is for her to take piano lessons (she plays, but the lessons would help). So, all in all, I think things could be far worse. We'll know more after the test on Friday.
