ArkieDukie wrote:Sounds good! What do you put in your cranberry relish? I made some for a church potluck yesterday and didn't have leftovers. :( Mine contains cranberries, a couple of navel oranges (ends removed, otherwise including the peel), a couple of granny smith apples (cored), and a small can of crushed pineapple, all chopped up in the food processor, and then add sugar to taste. This is a recipe that really tastes good the day after you make it.
Cranberries, orange (including peel), sugar, an apple, toasted pecans, and sugar. I like the idea of adding pineapple, though. That sounds yummy, and you're right--this recipe tastes better the next day!
Ooo, that sounds good. Can you post the recipe?
Ask and ye shall receive! Check out the recipe thread. Cathy, feel free to add your comments as well. I have some inexact amounts.

Then I'll make the sides... cranberry relish, Waldorf salad, sweet potato casserole, clean and wash the green beans. Then I'l start the table setting and centerpiece, make sure the silver is polished and all the glass ware sparkles. Everything else has to wait a day.....turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy. Let's see....is that it? I think with just the three of us, I'll just set up a smaller table in the living room by the fireplace this year.....with Grandmother's china.

I'm feeling fatter already.

Your day sounds wonderful. I know your dinner will be great and most appreciated. :)

I saw, thank you! I noted I'd make it Thursday in my post, but after reading the post above I'll try to make it tomorrow night.

Why do you leave the orange peel on?

Added flavor. It definitely tastes more orangey with the peel - probably due to the zest. You could probably just zest the orange rather than throwing in the entire orange, but it's far easier to use the entire orange.

My folks are in town for the whole week, so it will be a foursome for Thanksgiving dinner - I've had to scope down the menu, just because there's no way we would eat our way through all the dishes we normally serve when there are 8-10 folks. Plus, since they've been in town, we've gone out to some really yummy restaurants already - I think I've gained 5 lbs just since last Friday. (Two birthday cakes didn't help either.)

I'm almost looking forward more to Friday - Nebraska takes on Colorado in football, then Duke basketball, all to be accompanied by Thanksgiving dinner leftovers. Ymm, turkey sandwiches with cranberry relish!

Don't forget your appetizer, tonight's game vs. Herb and Eric. It starts around 9:30 EST/6:30 PST. It's on ESPN2 tonight (and ESPN on Friday).

I'm going to start cooking at 7 since I'm smoking my turkey, it should take about 7 hours. When are you starting to cook?

Wow. All these plans sound so wonderful. For the first time in a long time, it's just John and me. However, we're fixing Thanksgiving dinner the same as we always do - enough to feed an army.
Turkey
Gravy (our favorite part)
2-3 kinds of dressing (we each do at least one and then try to decide which we like best)
Green beans with almonds
corn pudding
baby limas
smashed potatoes
yeast rolls
sweet potato souffle
cranberry sauce (just don't have the drive to make relish this year - I seem to be the only one who likes it. it's just fresh cranberries, orange and sugar. love the toasted pecan idea and I may try the pineapple next year, too. and you're right that it's better the next day)
apple cranberry casserole
sweet potato pie
apple pie - if we were having more people I'd also make a coconut cake, but that's just too much for just us. One year I got very industrious and made persimmon pudding.

After we eat (around 4:00) we take a nice long walk through the neighborhood so we have room to handle some more nibbles in the later evening.

I like turkey and dressing sammiches the next day.

Here's hoping everyone has a marvelous day and enjoys spending time with family and loved ones.
Happy Turkey Day!
