This is our second year of doing the raised bed garden thing. We have 3 cherry tomato plants, 2 Better Boy tomato plants, 2 eggplants, 2 green pepper plants, a row of spinach, some onions, 2 cucumbers :pickle: , 2 sweet basil, 2 yellow squash and 2 zucchini squash.

Also, in the window boxes inside, we have parsley, chives, cilantro and oregano. They'll get transplanted outside when they're a little bit bigger. Maybe.

Julie and I spent a crazy amount of money this year on potting soil since we do so much gardening (flowers and veggies) in containers. We decided to see if we can save $ next year, and bought a composter. We'll use it all year long and keep collecting until next spring. We also spent a crazy amount of money on flowers (thank goodness for the clearance rack at Lowes), so we've decided to build a greenhouse in the back yard of the gallery. Next winter we'll start all of our flowers and veggies from seed instead of buying them.

We made compost last year, but we're still scared of putting it in the raised garden beds. So, we bought some more black cow and potting soil to add to our raised garden beds this year.

My suggestion was to put the composted soil around some of our flowering trees and shrubs in the back yard to see how well they respond.

There is an entire "ick" factor that I can't exactly articulate about putting compost in a garden bed of food that I might eat one day. And yet, I'm okay with putting black cow in that garden. :confusion-shrug:

I use a lot of Black Cow in my garden along with garden soil and potting soil. My garden is both in the ground and in containers.

There are a few okra seedlings starting to pop through to daylight. I planted ~40 seeds so hopefully I get at least 30 plants.

Well, as long as you compost what the cow eats, and not the cow, you should be ok and less icky.

I counted over 20 okra seedlings popped through the ground this afternoon. Butter beans and Asian long beans are also starting to push through the dirt in front of their trellis. B-)

It rained a lot yesterday with more forecast to fall today through Wednesday. Thursday is predicted to be sunny. I counted 32 okra plants this morning and my long beans and butter beans are starting to get some size so they will be attaching themselves to their trellis and climbing soon. With all the rain, I expect the garden will explode when sunshine returns the end of the week.

My pepper plants are looking great. I have a cowhorn cayenne and jalapeno growing in containers and four bell pepper plants in the ground.

I charged my camera battery yesterday as a gardening discussion is complemented nicely by pictures. B-)

The gardening experts tell me that the heat is going to get to our spinach plants, so I stood by our row of spinach yesterday and ate some of the little leaves. They were de-luscious.

I finished stringing the trellis for my long beans. At the bottom of the vertical strings, I loosely tied them directly to the bean plants so the plants will climb up the strings. I saw this method on a YouTube video and it worked perfect last year so I am optimistic it will work again.

My butter bean plants are looking good as well.

Our garden is small so I'm going to trellis the cucumber and squash plants.

Here are a couple of photos:

1. Golden Zucchini plant with my okra behind it. I've 34 okra plants. Flora's Lemon Grass is off to the left and there is an eggplant in the far corner. That plot is 8' wide by 16' long.

2. Early Girl tomato plant that has 12 tomatoes growing on it with lots of flowers. I've had good luck with this variety in the past.
