My question for ALL, however, remains "When did college become an appropriate place for illiterate and woefully unprepared people to 'study' in the first place?" What happened to the definition of "higher" education? It's disingenuous for Willingham or anyone else to suggest that any 3rd grade level student, with no matter how much tutoring, can be brought up to speed fast enough to earn a degree from a boni fide university. We've definitely lost our way.

You are correct. Looking at this situation from the 10,000 foot level, problem genesis is at the junior and senior high school level. If all these "great" athletes had to achieve passing grades in order to maintain eligibility to play on their junior/senior high school football/basketball team, a whole lot more emphasis on education would be taking place.

It's a complicated situation. Athletics are suppose to be extracurricular, but research shows participating in sports increases the odds a student will stay in school, so failing a student and causing a loss of eligibility can be seen as counterproductive. However, pushing students who are not producing satisfactory results isn't the answer as well. It is a chicken or egg scenario.

I have a serious question for the educators on the board...

According to some articles I've read on the internet, North Carolina will be going to a three tiered high school diploma in the near future. I'm not sure of the proper nomenclature for the three levels, but for conversational purposes I will use: Level 1 - graduated from high school; level 2 - qualified to attend technical school or Community College; level 3 - qualified to attend a 4 year university.

Obviously, a star football or basketball player (the guy reading at a 3rd grade level in some cases) will need a level 3 diploma to qualify to attend UNC (or Alabama, Auburn, Kentucky, Louisville, Georgia, Tennessee, Southern Cal, UCLA, Memphis, Connecticut, etc...) on a football/basketball scholarship.

How is this going to play out at the high school level? It seems to me there is going to be a Hugh Conflict between the Math/Science/English teachers & Guidance Counselors who identify players as level 1 or 2 candidates and the football & basketball coaches & athletic directors who say this guy has to have a level 3 diploma because Ole Roy or Nick Saban is interested.

How is this going to play out? Obviously, my post is missing a lot of details (as is my brain) on the specifics of how the three tiered system will work. It seems to me the situation is going to become a lot more complicated.

Like I ended my last post...I'm glad I'm not a teacher. And now I can add...I'm glad I'm not a high school sports coach.

Good question, Bob. I will ask our daughter, Dawn. She works directly for the superintendent of schools in Duplin Co. (Max's mom). I don't know where the football team this year stood, as far as grades, etc, but can tell you when they won the State Championship in 2007, over 50% of the team was on the honor roll. This is a minority school of 80% black. Football was the reason for a lot of the good grades and staying in school. So many of these children are from extremely poor homes.
