Devil in the Blue Dress wrote:Mom moved to a regular hospital room last night. This is progress, but it also presents a challenge since the staffing ratio is not like in ICU.

This morning I received a call from the hospital. Mom had her nurse to call me so Mom could talk to me. She wanted to be sure I knew she was in the hospital and had had a fall. While this was a sort of recycling via mild to moderate senile dementia, it's a great sign that she was able to be assertive and take some action on her own behalf.

This morning I'm still at my house for a while taking care of some administrative details for Mom and her care..... financial details with hospital, checking out skilled nursing and rehab facilities to prepare for working with social worker regarding discharge. Great support from clergy at my church.... prayers, visits and guidance regarding these decisions. Our parish has an outstanding Senior Ministry.

Feeding tube was to be installed through nose by a dr. today. Nurses tried twice yesterday and couldn't do it. I'm hoping Mom's difficulty swallowing will clear up soon since the neck brace has been off more than 24 hours.

I'm sharing these details not only as therapy for myself, but also to help others. I've realized how much I've learned from others through the oral tradition.

There were some important milestones today. Mom has always had trouble swallowing pills. She has not been able to pass a swallow study since her fall Monday. Feeding tube became the next step. We decided to go with the PEG tube to the stomach for a variety of reasons, but particularly because of the overriding focus on what sort of placement and treatment comes after the hospital. There are more options available with the PEG tube than the nose tube.

The right people showed up, some scheduled, some randomly, allowing Mom to be cleared for moving to ACE, a multidisciplinary rehabilitation program for elders that's part of Wake Forest Baptist Health. (It was the first such program in the country.) The transition could be as early as Monday, but could be a day or two later.... prior approval from Medicare and the State Health Plan.

Mom sat up in a chair today, stood and walked a short distance with assistance. Considering what a tough time she was having in ICU Tuesday, I would not have predicted that she'd be standing up today.

Thank you for keeping all the prayers, vibes and positive thinking. Having so many things have fallen into place and at the right time is no coincidence! ;;)

Another tough day. Things are very slow regarding the use of the PEG tube. Dr. in with Mom right now. She was finally given some of her heart medicine a short time ago... no meds given for about 24 hours while waiting to place tube and receive OK to use it. No significant nutrition since Sunday.

Tube installed by 4A today, but radiology very slow to read tests for secure and proper placement and give OK on placement.

Please send prayers and positive thoughts.

Just talked with the Dr. Mom's back on her heart meds (suspended temporarily for procedure for PEG tube). Her heart rate now is stable. Because it's over the weekend, he's sending her back to ICU at least overnight so she can be closely monitored. I'm relieved that she'll receive the extra care. It helped earlier in the week.

Thank you! Your support means a lot..... it works!
