We drove down to Topsail Island this afternoon to move the outdoor furniture indoors and put a few things in our storage shed under the house. Mandatory evacuation begins tomorrow at 6AM. We hope to be off the island (by car, not by air
) shortly after 8AM. High winds expected to start around 6 PM tomorrow night.
It was pretty fun to walk on the beach for an hour tonight at sunset and see the rough surf. I am not good at estimating wave height but I'd guess 6-8 feet now. We'll walk on the beach again tomorrow AM around sunrise and I'd bet the surf is rougher and the waves are 8-10 feet high by then.

You know there is a reason those houses are on stilts?

Last I heard, Wilmington will not get the hurricane but a tropical storm. Good news, especially since Jake opted not to leave.

All you beach dwellers need to give us an updated status report once you are somewhere west of the I-95 corrider. I talked to my Dad a few minutes ago and he said he was fine because he lives west of I-95 (wow, a whopping 5 miles west).
I use to run out to I-95 and back when I was on the high school cross country team (a lot of beer under the bridge since them days).
Seriously, good luck to all of you! Now everyone needs to go seek shelter west.

That is one nasty looking storm. Prayers and vibes to all friends and family along the coast. I hope all safely return to homes that are wet on the outside and dry on the inside.

If one isn't going to evacuate, I guess taking advantage of the storm's fringe benefits is appropriate:
