Another opportunity has presented itself as well. Lavabe sent me information for a couple of Lecturer positions (Coastal Carolina and App State; the latter looks like a good fit for me). I've been waffling a bit on what to do. I've been telling friends about my situation, and I heard back from one of them this morning. She was preparing to head for Emerald Isle with a friend; that friend is an adjunct faculty member at App State. My friend asked me if I was interested in getting back into teaching at App State! Keep in mind this was a cold mention - she had no idea that I was already looking at the App State position. Is it a sign? :-?
YES.

Especially after yesterday's discovery, this weekend will be devoted to job applications. A friend sent me a link yesterday to a position at the Univ of Wisconsin; the position is quite similar to the one I have here. In fact, I think I'm EXTREMELY well-qualified for the job. A similar position was posted on my professional society website for a position in Tampa. Cover letters and CV are going out before the weekend is up. I also found a few intriguing positions posted on LinkedIn, one of which is at Eli-Lilly in Indianapolis.

A question: are any of you on LinkedIn? If so, do you see any benefit to upgrading to a Job Searcher Premium membership?
Tampa?? Did you say Tampa :happy-bouncyblue: :happy-bouncyblue: :happy-bouncyblue: :happy-bouncyblue:

Yes, I'm on linkedin. I changed jobs last year and took a pass on the premium upgrade. However, I'm in the tech world near Philly and I didn't see the need, with plenty of online resources: Dice, Careerbuilder, Jobcircle, Monster. Many positions are cross-posted, so if it's on Linkedin, it might be on another job board too.

If I saw a position on one of the popular job boards, I would check Linkedin and reach out to a former colleague if I could and ask to have them refer me in. If the job is someplace where I don't know anyone, my next step would be to check the company's website and see if they have a jobs page. If I can find the posting there, I'd submit my resume that way, again in an attempt to separate myself out from a big pile from Monster. It's also another way to try and confirm it's a real opening that the company is interested in filling.

Arkie, I'm guessing your research world is smaller and more specialized than the general corporate IT / software arena, but it also seems like you're taking advantage of whatever online resources are available... That's definitely the way to go... Good luck!!

Two more job apps completed: two field applications specialist positions with another instrument company and a position similar to the one I have now, but in Madison, Wisconsin. Need to go browse for more job apps.

Gut check for App State/Coastal Carolina: not sure I can go back to teaching Gen Chem after what I've been doing for the past several years. I'm good at teaching, but gen chem is not my favorite thing to teach. Students don't deserve someone who doesn't want to be there. I really, really think I would be a great field applications specialist, since this type of position combines my teaching and technical skills. Hopefully one of the instrument companies will agree with me. Would be especially nice if BOTH did. All field apps jobs so far are on the east coast: two in Boston area, one in PA. At least one of the two might let me travel from my current location, which would be cool.

I had lunch yesterday with the local person who was supposedly going to mine his local connections on my behalf. As it turns out, he wanted to talk with me about why I need to stay put. He thinks my boss was just stressed and didn't mean what he said. He's affiliated (although not directly in) our lab, so he knows my boss well. I do not know if he has talked to my boss about all of this, but he very well could have. He doesn't know what I know, though: I will have a very difficult time staying after everything that has happened over the past few months.

I'm glad you had your gut check. If the instrument companies take you, fantastic. Regardless... vibes are a flowin' now! :wizard: :wizard:

Note to devildeac: Let's start vibing hard that she gets Madison, Wisoconsin. She'd be able to get some New Glarus. :D

If he talked to your boss, he needs to go back to your boss and tell the boss to talk to you himself. Boss needs to explain why he was such a jerk, what he will do to be sure it never happens again, and how great he will treat you for saving his butt by sticking to your guns and getting correct data into the paper. And then you can tell him to stuff it - you have a better opportunity.

Vibes going for your job search.

Precisely, my sister. I don't know why I should initiate a conversation that begins with, "Did you really mean it when you told me that I should find a new job?" Seems to me that, if he didn't mean it, he should say so.

Oh, and I found yet another error in The Minion's data analysis. (see the "dilemma" thread)

Madison is out. I got a message today that thanked me for my application and informed me that the position was no longer available due to budget cuts. Sorry, Lavabe and devildeac, no beer for you!

Madison is in for me! Not the Wiscy one though. Beer for me! HOME. Vacationing, not by choice.
LAID OFF! I used to get laid off twice every year. Two weeks after July 4th for two weeks, and two weeks after Christmas for 2 weeks. That was long ago. Too much seniority for the past 10 years. But now? I know not what to do with myself. I haven't been laid off in 10 years.
Oh well.
They say it'll (business) come back in June. Hmmmm :-? That's when we expect a new labor contract. :-? again
We will see.

AD, things will keep going your way. You will find a much better position than you are in now. Vibes from CTN will help make it happen but you are the real reason it will make things better for you. :ymhug:
