I resisted for a long time going to the manual approval. We actually had a couple human spammers come along (people who registered solely to promote a commercial product, but who were actual real people) and we got into some fun conversations with them.

The day straight-up porn photos started popping up ON THE BOARD was the day I decided we need to go to manual approval. Never gone back since. It's not really that hard for real people to register. It's absolutely incredible how many spambots try to get through. I delete hundreds at a time.
