Is that a freaking slice of cucumber on there, too? WTH? I know it's a Chicago dog but that's just not right.

I have not voted in the poll but will go on record as saying that when I eat a wiener, I'll construct it with several different combinations. One may be with slaw, mustard and a bit of chili; another may be with cheddar, bacon bits and ketchup; I might even have one with 'kraut, onions and mustard. I guess I eat about 3-4 hot dogs/year.

You couldn't be more wrong. Mustard was invented by the Nazis.
BZZZZZT!!!!!

You lose.

Another Nazi reference.

See "Godwin's law" link about 3-4 posts above this.

Oh I know all about Godwin's Law but someone else beat me to it so I figured I was safe as I thought it only replied to the first instance of referencing the Nazis in a thread.

Any use of mustard is evil.

Nope, the French were using them in the early 1800s.

I think that was the invention of the waffle cone at that world's fair.

And it doesn't count of only the French know about them. ;)

It's actually a pickle. Oh, and about Chicago style - don't knock it until you've tried it. It looks like a damn salad, but my goodness it's tasty.

Forbidding ketchup on a hot dog is not restricted to Chicago. Dirty Harry delivers his line with the friggin' Golden Gate bridge in the background, for example. I first heard the no ketchup rule in Norfolk, Va, not Chicago. In Eastern NC the traditional hot dog has mustard, onion and chili. Slaw is also a common condiment. You can even check out fast food dogs - ketchup isn't standard -at least not at Hardee's, Snoopy's or Sonic. Of course, most hot dog establishments offer ketchup for children.

I love ketchup - I eat it on scrambled eggs, burgers, fries (if I don't have Texas Pete), and onion rings. Never on a hot dog.
Ketchup is simply too sweet for a hot dog and overpowers the subtle flavors of the meat (or whatever it is, lol). I don't put ketchup on barbecue, either. Again, don't want to overpower the meat.

Nope, not going to give in to the French on this one:
http://whatscookingamerica.net/History/ ... amCone.htm
The French can eat out of paper or metal cones for all I care.

St. Louisans usually claim first on the hotdog bun and the ice cream cone. Frankly, it IS St. Louis trivia (see my note to Arkie in that post). St. Louisans have come up with a number of these sorts of stories, each with an element of truth, but mangled around. As the article suggests, the Fair changed around the consumption of ice cream cones. The cone existed before, but was first popularly SOLD at the fair.

If anyone should claim to be the birthplace, according to the article, it's Manchester, England.

DEFINITELY not France.

Chicago-style dogs that I have eaten usually have the following:
1) A poppy seed bun;
2) sport peppers;
3) blue-green algae, I mean, relish;
4) chopped onions (not grilled);
5) YELLOW mustard;
6) a dill pickle spear;
7) celery salt; and
8) either a fresh cucumber or tomato slice.

The first time I saw it, I freaked out. Then I tried it. Ymm.

Just sayin'.
:D

Trust me, the Mancs have never had an original idea in their lives.

Not to cause thread jack or anything (FYI colchar-my "more smilies" isn't working either), but anyone going to Norfolk, VA, needs to go to Doumar's and have an ice cream cone. They're still making cones off what they claim is the original cone machine, invented by a Doumar patriarch.

They still do curb service, and their limeades are to die for. I don't think I've ever had a hot dog from there, though (a vain attempt to get back on point!)

Yeah, don't tell anyone from Norfolk, VA that the ice cream cone was invented by anyone other than the Doumars. They still have the original waffle irons Abe Doumars had built in 1905 - and use them daily to make cones.
Here they are on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.

Nope. It was the Romans (in the world according to Wiki).

FWIW, it was first used as a hot dog condiment in St. Louis at the 1904 World's Fair. I believe the ice cream cone was first sold at that fair as well.

NOTE TO ARKIE: Hopefully you have been learning useless St. Louis trivia. Eventually, it CAN be used in conversation.
I'm working on it, Lavabe! I did know about the ice cream cone but not about mustard. Maybe I need to go visit the MO History Museum again.

I believe you are referring to two pickled sport peppers, a basic on a traditional Chicago dog.

I'll have two with chili, cheese and mustard. Gulden's is prefered, please.

Next, two with mayo, ketchup, A-1, goat, Jif, yellow peppers, head cheese, watermelon, Spam, not so much rat and...
garnish with a cherry. :-BD
