Y'all, please send lots of vibes. I'm not sure exactly what is going on, but I'm very concerned that a certain evil someone is up to no good. I was working away last Friday when my office phone rang; it was a number I didn't recognize. When I answered, they asked for said evil colleague. The caller was allegedly interested in starting a research collaboration and wanted to know of said evil colleague's status at our institution. I kept responding to their questions with, "I don't know," and I finally directed them to call the evil one where she is currently hanging her broom.

The phone call didn't feel like it was coming from one of her potential collaborators. It felt like a fishing expedition. I'm not sure what they wanted me to say, but it felt like they were waiting for me to say something I never said. Also, in my 4+ years here, no one has ever called me and asked to talk to the evil one. Why would they? I don't work for her. And why would these calls start now? I can think of a few possibilities, and they aren't good.

I would not, as a matter of course give any information out about a fellow employee. You never know who's on the other end whether it's a collection agency trying to find information whether it's somebody doing identity theft whether it's a lawyer for an ex I say nothing. And I would politely say I'm sorry I can't help you and give them her number and her superiors.
