Massive successful-interview vibes headed your way! I just used some to get 2 competing offers at the 'borg, so I can vouch that they're particularly powerful from the West Coast right now. Good luck, chica - knock 'em dead!

Re: The Job Search Thread
Holy cow. Speaking of CTN vibes working overtime, something completely unexpected happened today. Remember that I'm here interviewing for a senior scientist position, right? Well, I had a meeting with the department chair for pharmacology/toxicology. The purpose of the meeting? To offer me a faculty position in his department! He's a fellow Duke Ph.D. chemistry alumnus and believes that my background is EXACTLY what he wants in his department. It really threw me for a loop; speaking of NOT being what I expected! (Not in a bad way.)
This is something I really need to think about. It is something I might be interested in, but I think it would be wise to get here and establish myself before jumping into a tenure track faculty position. WIth that being said, it sounds like an excellent opportunity. PHB's head would explode if I actually got a tenure track faculty position somewhere.

Re: The Job Search Thread
I understand that this unexpected manna requires some thoughtful consideration. Having the Duke tie plus being sought after could make this a very appealing change of direction. Don't demote yourself to having to prove yourself before you get on a tenure track. The only one you'd be proving yourself to is yourself. This guy sees some great potential in you..... that's why he offered the job!ArkieDukie wrote:Holy cow. Speaking of CTN vibes working overtime, something completely unexpected happened today. Learn more about this department and what's going on there. An unexpected change may work out better than anything you might have envisioned up until now. Give absolutely no thought or consideration to what the folks back at your current place of employment will think. This is about you and your happiness.

Establishing yourself? You've already done that!
Your health will improve tremendously. This is the BIGGEST factor.
NEGOTIATE, but go tenure-track. What were the dean and other administrators like? Find out about personal development funds, lab start-up funds, library resources (ask to speak to the library liaison), and find out about the promotion and tenure procedures. What sort of tenure clock are they thinking. Can you get time off the clock? Research the recent history of the department.

Re: The Job Search Thread
Dinner was fun, and I didn't spill any red sauce on my red shirt. These people are fun! The crew consisted of me, the two people who want to hire me, and 2 department chairs (one of which is the one who wants to give me a tenure track position). Definitely a collegial group.
Regarding the faculty position, rumor has it that there's not an official position yet. That's part of the reason I was thinking about coming in and then going into the tenure track position. I definitely need to get more info about the department, and I didn't meet the dean. I did like the department chair, though, and I like his philosophy. As I suspected, there's a substantial gap between what they can offer and what I'm making now ($20k). It will be interesting to see what happens.
