In a way, I feel badly for BM. She set out to prove her superiority over Natasha and me; instead she committed career suicide. Road Runner is in the process of drafting a performance improvement plan for BM as mandated by Human Resources (since she can't fire her). The required tasks include all the work that BM has refused to do for the past year. It will be interesting to see how she responds.

Yeah, that's what I predict her reaction will be. She's not stable under the best of circumstances. Our best hope is that she leaves sooner rather than later. OH HELL NO. Repeat: HELL NO. I am sure she would not be feeling sorry for you - she would be looking for a way to step on your fingers as you dangled from the cliff.
Karma seems to have come home to roost. She is not always swift but her aim is always true. Or, in the words of that great philosopher Mike Cross "Father do not mourn for me, mother do not weep. Whatever a man soweth, that also shall he reap." Don't feel sorry for her. It could be fatal.
Need I remind you she has done pretty much anything she thought she could get away with to undercut everyone else?

Performance improvement plans are interesting things. I have personally put a couple of people on them in my career and have know a few more who were on plans. Generally even if they successfully complete the plan they don't stay - they find another gig ASAP. I realize that is much harder in your field than in IT. I know of one person who took the Plan to heart, genuinely improved and it all turned out fine - she did leave the department but stayed in the company and did quite well. The usual reaction to being put on a plan is either despondent or defiant. In her case I would guess defiant. Sometimes they go all scorched earth and try to throw anyone and everyone under any bus they can find. Watch your back, front and sides. Stay low, and try and stay out of it.
As of right now, I have gone against Road Runner's recommendation and made BM a coauthor on my paper. It is the fairest thing to do, given her role in the project. She is way down the list, and I suspect she will demand to be moved up.
