Re: LTE 2.0
I've had some interesting conversations this week with Road Runner regarding BarMinion. Based upon a few things that RR said, I suspect that BarMinion is getting the same opportunities as me (co-editor for upcoming book, co-author on chapter and journal) in order to keep her from feeling slighted. Road Runner would never come right out and say this, though. First conversation of the week: BM was ticked because she wasn't first author on an abstract that RR submitted for a presentation at an upcoming conference, and she was miffed that the new postdoc was listed before her. Basically, she always pushes to put herself at the front of the list, whether it's warranted or not. She thinks she should be listed first because she has done sample prep and analyzed samples. Data analysis takes far longer, and that's what the new postdoc and I are doing.
Today, RR mentioned having a headache because she was reviewing a paper in which the author's English was so atrocious that the paper was difficult to decipher. I assumed it was for a journal and suggested that she just reject it outright and demand a re-write. When RR told me that it was a paper written by a member of the group, I knew immediately who she was talking about. This means that we have a co-author/co-editor on our book ventures who cannot even write, and she has the position for political reasons. This is RR's call, not mine, but I will be mightily ticked if I end up picking up the slack yet again due to BM's lack of writing ability.
I do feel somewhat sorry for Road Runner in that good help is hard to find (although calling BM "good help" is a stretch in many ways). BM is classic taker, and RR is trying to keep BM happy while not encouraging her behavior. That's a very delicate balance. My impression is that RR is starting to call her out on her BS, albeit not publicly. She basically got a "you've got to pay to play" message. BM is so much like The Minion in many respects that it's not even funny. I'm just happy that RR has a better BS-o-Meter than PHB and Pushy PI.

Re: LTE 2.0
Our colleague Wile E. Coyote is still a super genius. He stopped by my office yesterday to ask whether I have a particular software package that he wants. The answer was no. He then proceeded to tell me about how he needs the software because HE is really interested in digging into the data. I'm so bad - I told him that I'm more focused on making sure I have good data. It went flying right over his head.
I mentioned this conversation to Road Runner. As it turns out, the software that WEC wants to purchase is several years out of date. Given all else I've seen since his arrival, that's not too surprising. I should also mention that we are using freeware to do the same thing. Current freeware. Not $5000 outdated software.
The sad thing is that he will likely persuade The Boss to buy this software for him.

The schedule always comes it in late August. If memory serves it is usually around the 23rd/24th. Never sooner. You might hear about WHO we will play before that but the day/time isn't available until late August.

P.S. Cornell's fight song is to the tune of "Give My Regards to Broadway." Lame.
