Not doing P90X today. I had to mow the lawn. We have 1/2 acre + now, and it's all grass. Plus there's a ginormous hill out back. It was 85 degrees out, it took me over two hours, and I'm done for the day. I figure that counts as a good cardio workout, right?bjornolf wrote:Good Morning all. Just finished my first P90X workout. Here's Grammar Girl's take on addictive v. addicting....ArkieDukie wrote:I have a grammar question, and I can't think of a better place to ask it. Is "addicting" a real, acceptable word? It seems to me as though people are using "addicting" when they should be using "addictive." For example, "The game Words with Friends is addicting." One of my family members used the word "addicting" in this manner, and everyone jumped on me when I corrected the person who did it. It doesn't seem to me that these words should be interchangeable. Am I missing something?
I was about to offer Grammar Girl's take on the matter. She is correct; as are you, Arkie. "Addicting" is the participle of an entirely different sense of the word "addict." Addicting basically means "annoying."lawgrad91 wrote:Here's Grammar Girl's take on addictive v. addicting....ArkieDukie wrote:I have a grammar question, and I can't think of a better place to ask it. I'm not sure she carries as much authority as.
People should say whatever they like. ;-)wilson wrote:I was about to offer Grammar Girl's take on the matter. She is correct; as are you, Arkie. So the next time someone makes this error and/or people jump on you for correcting them, you should tell them how addicting it is that they don't know how to properly deploy the word "addictive."
Most people do: grammatical conventions be damned!People should say whatever they like. ;-)
