Outrageous brew. First, I am not sure why they call this beer/ale except the fact it's made with Colorado mountain water, yeast, barley and hops, and in this case, Turbinado sugar. It packs a hop wallop at 107 IBU but the massive amount of dark malts (chocolate and black patent, most likely) far outweigh any bitterness here. The ABV is a stunning, almost liqueur-like 16.83%, so it is rather boozey, with tastes of dark rum and dried dark fruits. There are also aromas and tastes of mocha, anise and rich, black strap molasses. It is $9 for a 12 ounce bottle so I allowed myself to sip this out of a burgundy glass in 4 ounce portions the last 3 nights. The bottling date was December, 2009 and I recieved this as a trader from rmd last spring when we met on our ski, err, medical meeting, trip, in March. So, a tip of the toboggan and snifter to rmd, wherever and whenever you might be lurking . Samael and The Beast comprise the remainder of Avery's demon series. I actually like World Wide Stout even better as it has less licorice notes, but this brew is certainly worth the purchase of a couple bottles, one for your sipping pleasure now and 1 to cellar for a year or five.

Northern Hemisphere Wet Hop Ale-Sierra Nevada

I'll let the brewer explain first:

The cornerstone of our Harvest series is the beer that started the modern-day fresh hop ale phenomenon in America, our original Harvest Ale.

Created in 1996, Harvest Ale features Cascade and Centennial hops from the Yakima Valley in Eastern Washington. These hops are harvested and shipped as “wet” un-dried hops—the same day they are picked—to our brewery in Chico where our brewers eagerly wait to get them into the brew kettle while their oils and resins are still at their peak

Now, it's my turn. This is the 3rd wet hop ale I have ever tasted and it is a great concept and product. The 1st may have been Southern Hemisphere from Sierra Nevada also. The 2nd was So Fresh, So Green Green from Terrapin, but that was only a 1-2 ounce taster from Tyler's when the server brought the wrong 1st beer so I got a free sample but didn't review it. I gotta buy a bomber of it. This one has a pungent, citrus-laced nose and a slightly oily, resin/citrus blend taste. The color is golden and the head is foamy and lingered thoughout the 12 ounces I had with dinner and again for the closer for the evening. As I mentioned in the dinner thread, tonight's dinner was pretty simple but this ale would pair well with curry or spicy grilled fare, too. CB&B found this in Blacksburg and was a trader last month. An excellent find.

Now I gotta go out and find a bottle of the Hoptimum that bluebeer liked so much...

Today was SA Latitude 48 six pack and SN Torpedo six pack day. It was a hop head afternoon. I should have drank both 6 packs...I'd be feeling better.

Southern Pale Ale-Natty Greene

Pretty standard stuff with a golden-yellow color, caramel malt backbone and sweetness and some floral hops. IBU about 50 and an ABV about 5-6%, or, better IBU than our shooting %age today and an ABV better than our 3pt shooting %age for the first 37 minutes of the game or so. But, this ale didn't suck like our *efense did for darn near 40 minutes this afternoon.

I haven't tried the Lattitude 48 but I love Torpedo...
I went to the game yesterday and after the depressing drive from NY to Boston, I was at least pleased to see that my brother-in-law brought back the following beers from a trip to San Francisco..

Pick Axe Pale Ale-TommyKnocker Brewing

I drank this brew on Sunday, too. It sucked. Just like our defense and 3 point shooting.


Well, not really. It was a pretty standard pale ale with solid caramel malt, some floral hops, an orange-golden color, modest head, an IBU about 40-50 and an ABV around 5.5-6%. A nice beverage with grilled chicken, burgers, sausages and lighter soups.

Ornery Amber-Tommyknocker Brewing

Pretty standard brew here. Think Fat Tire. Medium, clear brown color with caramel and crystal malts imparting a mild brown sugar sweetness and the hops lending a faint floral aroma and taste. IBU should be about 30 and the ABV is 5.4% so I have the capacity to compare with an organic amber I received as a trader today . Have this with grilled chicken or a pork loin and some cinnamon apples.

I had a 12 pack of the Tommyknocker ales about 2 years ago and thought they sucked which was quite disappointing as I had several of their brews over the years while visiting Colorado and thought they were quite good on draft and bottled. I figure I got a really stale 12 pack so I am pleasantly surprised/pleased with these traders I got from the drug rep a couple weeks ago after he returned from a meeting in Colorado.

Fish Tale Organic Amber Ale-Fish Brewing

New brew from my drug rep. Think Fat Tire again with a bit or earthiness and more of a whole wheat toast taste instead of a lightly baked croissant. IBU about 30 and an ABV about 5%. Good with sammiches, burgers or mild sausages off the grill

Alpine Glacier-Tommyknocker Brewing

Fittingly, I damn near froze this in the 1st half tonight before drinking it. Floral aroma and taste with some light malty sweetness. I'd guess about 20 IBU and about 5% ABV. A nice summer/front porch/lawn mower brew to accompany some light appetizers. Another trader from a drug rep at the office.

A friend gave me a bottle of Founders Breakfast Stout a few days ago--I am trying to save it for the Carolina game, but don't know if I can wait--perhaps the Super Bowl will win out.
