I forgot to whom the majority of voters would be, I suppose.
You see, where I work there are about 70-80 people. Oddly enough of that many people, there are only about 12 guys!
And of the women who inhabit the building between 8 am and 5 pm, 80% are over 40 years old.
What does this mean?

It means that such a demographic has little appreciation for a robust, hearty chili with two kinds of meat and three kinds of beans!
And I do not believe they appreciated the beer equation.... I know I know, I was shocked too.

Jeez, I didn't make the chili spicy hot, I figured that would be enough.

So I came in sixth in a field of six.
The winner was a chicken and white beam chili (a farcical concoction!)
2nd place.... the Prez of the company with his quaint little bland chili (Until today, he was the Susan Lucci of Chili cookoffs)
And third place was a chili cheese dip (can you say IN A BOTTLE?!!)
I wont even bother mentioning fourth and fifth place. [-x

I am bummed, I wont mind admitting. But at least I got 11 votes (3 of which within my own dept (of 3... including myself)).

Bah Humbug [-(
I'll have some, either on 9/19 or 9/26. Or both. ;) :D

With a brown ale or porter if the weather cools off a bit.

I'm looking forward to us getting some at brunchgate. We know winning food when we see it.
I may jack it up a little at the next brunchgate. :-? a little extra spice along with beer to deal with the effects! :))

It is taking every ounce of restraint I have to not lace my post with obscenities cursing those that might:
1) try to pass off chicken and white beans as chili!
2) might be so clueless to cast votes in favor of a white chili!

In other words, I feel for you. No, it's more than that. I am angry for you!
Perhaps next year you can adopt suggest that the company adopt something similar to the ICC rules on Chili Competitions. They propose categories for Green chili and Red chili. Note: They do not propose a category for a wimpy, poser-ass white chili!!!!!!!!! X( :(( :(( :((

Marv buddy, I think it just might be time you quit that damn company. ;-)

The chili cook off, was this a joke? In the real world, white beans would never win. The judges would have thrown it out. Off with their heads!

I got a say, i was kind of wondering the samething about the beans and especially the chicken! Although it sounds interesting to taste, I definitely would NOT have had it in the winning threesome!!!!! I have to echo.... OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!!!!

Thanks for the support, I appreciate it.
I must stress once again however that it is my fault first and foremost for not realizing for whom the chili cook-off would be judged.
Most white, middle-aged women. The mentality of health oriented, wine swilling, no-spice-in-life who run hot and cold (for obvious middle-aged reasons) types.
No offense to those in the audience who took offense, just my honest opinion.

If I had substituted chicken for the beef and sausage, and left out the beer, I may have come in third or second.

ABSOLUTELY!!! What flippin nerve!
It's bad enough cheese chili dip came in third! CANNED cheese dip! What does this really say to the quality of the contest to begin with?

I am miffed, not sure quite yet if this is a company I am gonna hang with long term. Heck, not sure if I'll even last end of the year. This job is gonna turn really crazy between October and Dec/Jan. So crazy in fact that I am just not sure about the place.

And to think they chose a chicken chili with white beans.... nuff said there!

Marv's 3 bean chili!

Ingredients:

* 1/2 pound ground chuck
* 1/2 pound ground pork
* 1 large onion, diced
* 3 tablespoons chili powder, medium to hot
* 1 cans (14.5 ounces each) diced tomatoes
* 1 cup broth (chicken, veggie or beef... your choice)
* 1 bottle beer (recommend something with honey and/or smoky flavoring)
* 3 bay leaves
* 3 large garlic cloves
* 1 1/2 teaspoons dried leaf oregano
* 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
* 1 can (15 ounces) red beans, drained and rinsed
* 2 can (15 ounces) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
* 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, drained and rinsed
* salt, to taste
* Cornmeal (if applicable)
* Optional and to taste: Add 3 chopped Jalapenos; 1 habanero; 2 banana peppers (slivered); 1/2 cup red pepper flakes.

Preparation:
In a large pot, brown beef, pork & onions until no longer pink.
At the same time, prep crock pot by adding drained beans, pepper, broth
tomatoes

Add beer, and all other spices. Cook until beer boils down.

Drain half the remaining liquid out, then pour the rest, along with pan contents, into the crock pot with the other ingredients.
Cook for 3 to 4 hours or until tender, stirring frequently and adding water if necessary.
If too much liquid for your taste, stir in cornmeal or flour to thicken a bit.

As I white middle aged woman...I can say the problem is not your demographic...you just have an office of idiots.

Chicken <> chilli
white beans <> chilli.

If it has no kick it is not chilli...it is sloppy joe with beans.

I'm just sayin'

Chili is a lot like BBQ: many kinds in many places and people will defend their kind of chili (or BBQ) vigorously.

Ingredients

* 3/4 cups white vinegar
* 3/4 cup water
* 1 tablespoon kosher salt
* 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
* 3 tbsp garlic
* 2 cucumbers, ends trimmed and thinly sliced
* 1 sm white onion, 1 sm red onion, peeled and thinly sliced

Directions

In medium saucepan over high heat, combine the vinegar, salt, sugar, the crushed garlic clove. Bring to a boil, then turn the heat off and allow to cool.

Put the cucumbers and onions in a large, nonmetallic serving bowl and the thinly sliced garlic and toss to combine.

When the vinegar mixture has cooled, strain it into a small bowl and pour it over the vegetables. Stir to coat the vegetables with the vinegar mixture. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.

That is a great point DitBD. We must all agree on one universal truth though, chili is a stew. :-bd

How I would classify chili depends on how it's served. In a bowl is one thing. On a hot dog is another.... do you put stew on a hot dog?

If it's on a hot dog, it still ain't a soup then, it's a condiment. :D

You've not been to the right places for hot dogs! It's the chili that makes the dog!
