I know we're not supposed to say it, but we're watching the birth of the American Nazi Party. Though I doubt their marketing people will go with that name.
That's that other board. The cool thing about this board is that you can say stuff like that, as long as you don't say it about another poster. And, I completely agree with you. The Republican Party is not about the exchange of ideas, or about the good of the people, or about principles of government at all. It has turned itself into a personality cult, and anyone who disagrees is to be run out on a rail. That's pretty much a description of the Nazi Party.

It's funny that the article ends with a comment about Trump being canceled. The implication is that it is tragic for that to happen, but meanwhile, the article mentions numerous instances where opponents of the Great Dictator are being run out of their positions or entirely out of the Party. Seems kinda like cancellation to me.
Exactly right. The Trump Republicans are not "for" anything except for being against anything Democrats want. But they largely don't oppose Democrats on principle - they just view Democrats as the enemy who need to be opposed no matter what. If Democrats suddenly started being pro-life, I wouldn't be surprised if Trumpers flipped (OK, I'm exaggerating a bit). They are a cult. And they are being led by a mentally unhealthy human being. And anyone who thinks Trump is not mentally unhealthy is likely very mentally unhealthy.

Dems need to really keep our eyes on the ball and get things done asap. Republicans at the state level are doing everything they can to change the rules to make it hard for Democrats to win. But Democrats also have to continue to be welcoming to the more moderate, never-Trump Republicans. Biden is walking the tight rope with the different parts of the Democratic party, and the Democrats need to stay strong and play the long game. Obviously easy for me to say as a more moderate Democrat. All of the super woke, wish list type plans have got to be tabled. Stick to the core issues, don't roll over for the Republicans but try to work with the more reasonable ones, and don't give them talking points that make us look like extremists.

I have a theory to explain some of Trump’s erratic behavior. I read an article a day or so ago that said he drank at least 7 or 8 Diet Cokes a day, so I did some research on the effects of excessive consumption of aspartame. It turns out that it totally messes up neurotransmitter levels in the brain. Among the possible side effects are learning problems, irritability, insomnia, neurodegeneration, strokes, and mood disorders. Another is obesity. In general, it has an adverse effect on neurobiological health. Some individuals are more susceptible than others; there’s a genetic component to the risks. This translates to different symptoms for different people. All of this comes from reputable scientific journals. And, excessive aspartame consumption can exacerbate existing mental health issues. What if this is part of the issue with Cheeto?

I’ve followed the aspartame saga for years; this is the only reason I even thought to do a quick lit search. All the possible side effects mentioned above come from reputable scientific journals. There’s a Wikipedia page claiming this is all a hoax, but at a cursory glance I didn’t see any solid scientific research. Personally, I avoid the stuff as much as I can.

Mitch is such a sleaze. We know that. So what really struck me in this article was Mitt's comment re Trump in 2024:
And I would probably be getting behind someone I thought more represented the tiny wing of the Republican Party that I represent.
"Tiny wing". This is your new Republican Party.

I like those flavored sparkling waters. I bought a bunch a couple of years ago, and drank them fairly regularly. I don't get headaches often, but I noticed I was having one pretty constantly. Looked up the ingredients for the water, since it was really the only thing in my diet that had changed, and aspartame stood out. I Googled "Aspartame" and headache immediately followed in suggested results. Of course "the research" said that it wasn't a side effect, but myself and several other internet users seemed to strongly disagree.
I quit drinking the water, and the headaches went away, virtually overnight.

Maybe that's why he seems constantly grumpy.

Yep. Another known side effect is headaches.

For Cheeto, many things make sense. Irritability, check . Inability to focus long enough to read a security briefing, check. Insomnia, etc.

I'm going to need somebody to explain to me how the golden Trump idol is ok with Christians. I mean, I'm no expert on religion but I did watch The Ten Commandments with Charlton Heston.

Exactly - I'm a little rusty on what they taught us in religious school back in the day, but I do remember the whole "worship no false idols" thing was pretty important. Most organized religions also frown on lying but the evangelicals seem to have made peace with Trump doing that, and they all claim to be pro-life but that largely only applies to their treatment of those who are not yet born. Hypocrisy?

I am wondering if the idol is like Trump and is hollow on the inside and completely lacking a brain and a heart.

Watching Rachel Maddox tonight and she remarked about the news today that the tRumps had been vaccinated in January? He is such a sneaky bastard. Why not inform it? We all know why of course. One problem the country will have now is vaccine acceptance. One poll recent poll showed that 70% of Democrats plan to take the vaccine vs. 30% of republicans.

As expected, Tanden's nomination to Biden's cabinet has been withdrawn.

It does cause me to wonder what will move Joe Manchin one way or the other. This was a test of his clout, and he proved he has plenty. On the other hand, he COULD also be serving as a Democratic bridge to the moderates on the Republican side, potentially, if he wants to leverage that. If push came to shove, he could threaten to actually vote for a filibuster override if there is no sense that anyone on the other side of the aisle wants to compromise on things like anti-gerrymandering provisions and so on. I'm really very curious to see where Manchin goes with his new-found leverage and whether or not Biden can work with him to get bigger things done.

And, as always, Democrats are proving to be the cats it is difficult to herd, while Republicans renew their ability to unify in opposition to pretty much anything, regardless of the consequences. I don't understand how that is something folks are anxious to vote for, but it seems to have become firmly entrenched in the Republican ethos.

I am so very pissed at our gutless representatives. They've canceled today's session because of the Trumpist's threats. This completely sends the wrong message to these terrorists. Let them go ahead and try something, and this time wipe them out. This is a huge victory for these terrorists, and I bet they are laughing and celebrating today.

The New York Post is a rag, but they nail the headline here:

The silly thing is that the Senate is in session. It makes zero sense to close one of two houses in the same building in response to a perceived threat. If they couldn't convince the Senate to recess for the day, what's the point? The building still needs to be defended, and now the rumor-mongers have discovered they have leverage. Expect an increase in "credible threats" that fail to materialize, much like today's won't, just to see if a reaction can be provoked and make the news.

Exactly. I know everyone here doesn't agree with me on this, but I am more and more getting to the point where I just wish they would split off, have their own country with their own set of ridiculous beliefs based on false information, and just leave the rest of us alone. Good riddance.

Shutting down Congress is exactly what they want. Because they are not for anything - Congress doing absolutely nothing is their goal, especially with a Democrat majority. Rather than try to compromise and find common ground, they are investing 100% of their efforts in a) preventing anything from happening, and b) re-writing rules at the state level to rig elections in 2022 and going forward. Politics is a game to them and they view this as winning, rather than the true goal of politics, making this country a better place for all Americans.
