I have TMJ, which my dentist attributes to the orthodontic work I had done in my teens.

I had an underbite that was corrected via slowly breaking of my upper jaw. The left jaw joint does not line up causing pain in my jaw. As a result, I now have to wear an "appliance" at night to alleviate the pain.

I passed out repeatedly the day I got braces. Make sure she stays hydrated when she gets home.

I think "The Little Pitchforks" would win the youth section of the Old Fiddlers' Convention in Galax, VA, coming up the end of this month or early next month.

While I doubt this will be important to many of you, it is very important to me so I thought I would post this.

Today marks the 70th anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill's famous "Never in the field of human conflict" speech which paid tribute to 'the Few' who fought in the Battle of Britain and, in doing so, ensured Britain's continued survival at a time when she and her Dominions (countries that had been part of the Empire) stood alone in the face of Axis aggression.

This anniversary was, of course, commemorated in Britain including a fly-past along Whitehall of a Hurricane and a Spitfire, the two planes that did the lion's share of the work in defeating the Luftwaffe. Also, as some may have noticed, a portion of Churchill's speech has been my signature here for a while now.

I took these back in 2005 but always visit this memorial when I am there. The Victoria Embankment is probably my favourite place in the world and part of the reason for that is this memorial.

The third photo in that group shows a carving of St. Paul's Cathedral surrounded by flames - this is a reproduction of Herbert Mason's famous photograph of the dome of St. Paul's surrounded by flames as The City (‘The City’ refers to the Square Mile, the original section of London when it was founded c couple of millennia ago) and the East End burned as a result of a German air raid on the night of 29-30 December 1940.

This is easily one of the most iconic images to emerge from World War II. The Daily Mail, when it published the photo, claimed that it was "one that all Britain will cherish - for it symbolizes the steadiness of London's stand against the enemy: the firmness of Right against Wrong."

In the words of historian A.N. Wilson, that photograph, and the image of St. Paul's emerging from a city engulfed in flames, "told the world that though everyone else in Europe had surrendered to Nazism, or formed unworthy alliances with it, the capital city of the British Empire would do no such thing."

This image embodied the spirit of defiance which enabled London, and Londoners, to survive the Blitz and, ultimately, to emerge triumphant after six long years of war but, had it not been for ‘the Few’, Britain would have been invaded in September of 1940 and the British would never have had the chance to rise to "their finest hour".



Alright, thus endeth today's history lesson. My apologies for the long post but this anniversary, and particularly the sacrifices of 'the Few', are issues that a near and dear to my heart and these people deserve to be remembered while they are still with us (the survivors are in their 90s now so we won't have many more chances to commemorate their heroism while they are still alive).
