I was in ALE court this morning. The prosecutor wasn't being a very good listener this morning as I attempted to explain why my client wasn't in court. She is in school at UNC-W, and her entire first floor apartment was flooded out. He tried to tell me that she should be here in court because UNC-W evacuated and wasn't having class. I told him that she couldn't get here since Wilmington is an island right now, and her apartment was flooded. He wasn't having any of it. He said, "You can just throw me under the bus, to her. Blame me" for his attempt to have an order for arrest issued for her failure to appear on a day when it was impossible for her to appear.

I said, "I'm not going to throw you under the bus. That's not my style. You don't know me. I don't play those games. I will tell my client the truth."

The prosecutor called my case first. In front of a full courtroom, I pleaded my client's case to the judge, and when I had finished explaining my client's plight to the Chief District Court Judge (without even mentioning the prosecutor in my argument), the prosecutor walked across the room and APOLOGIZED to me.

There was no order for arrest issued. The judge recognized all of the community service work that my client had already done, and the evaluation work that she had already finished.

Did I mention that the prosecutor APOLOGIZED to me?

The prosecutor APOLOGIZED to me.

It was kind of a big deal.

:9f:
That is a VERY big deal. Of course, if the prosecutor hadn't been an asshole to start with, there would have been no need for an apology in open court. Hopefully that will teach him/her a lesson. :9f:

I'm too jetlagged and happy to be back on the East Coast to harrumph this morning.

For those of you scratching your heads and wondering where LG has been, Sunday a week ago we left Raleigh on a jet plane for SeaTac. Spent a week and a day with the Rev LG's 88 year old mother and his exceptionally fundamentalist relatives.

It was a better trip than the previous ones as far as the family was concerned, but not a vacation in the least. Especially not the one day when it didn't rain at any point in time, which was the same day MIL had a TIA and ended up in the hospital.

She is home. Has a little leg weakness, but insisted on us returning on our schedule.

I even missed my office. :9f:

Good morning! I made such a HUGE sacrifice this morning. A couple at church are temporary guardians for a newborn. She had a medical test scheduled for this morning and needed someone to come along to watch the baby for her. I made the supreme sacrifice of meeting her at the appointment and watched the baby. It was so hard to hold a little one, feed her, talk to her, etc. I should probably take the rest of the day off to recover from this extreme hardship. My only question to her would be - can I do it again? :D (I think I only knocked over 5 people so that I could be the one to help out.)

I'm glad the MIL is home, LG. Praying she has a full recovery. I hope you can maintain the feeling enough to avoid the harrumpfs for another day or two.

It sounds like an exhausting trip. I'm glad that your MIL is home from the hospital. I hope that she continues to improve!

You deserve a medal for such sacrificial behavior, Dink.

It's 2:00 here and I'm still not completely swamped on my first day back.

I have the hippie Judge tomorrow. :obscene-smokingsombrero:
