The Lakers originally played in Minneapolis, so there you go.

Great. But what is a laker? I know what a lake is. Is a laker a guy who swims all day long?

A Laker does the same thing to lakes as a 76er does to 76es.

76ers makes sense, kinda. I think it's a reference to the fact that Philadelphia was the capital back in 1776 when the nation was first founded, right? Or maybe that the declaration was signed in Philly in 1776.

And a laker is a term for a ship used on the Great Lakes for transporting goods. Old term used by ocean sailors to refer to lake ships.

Me and my friends were having a discussion about that the other day. Most of the NBA mascots are just plain funny  .

You're right on both counts. I was just trying to point out that I think both names are pretty dumb. In the process, however, I let you beat me to a bit of nautical history.

The LA Lakers moved to LA from their original home of Minneapolis many eons ago. Hence, the Lakers.

The New Orleans Hornets actually qualify as an under-the-radar misnomer, too. The franchise's name originates with Cornwallis' description of the people of the Carolinas as like a "nest of hornets" after the British were whipped at Cowpens and then King's Mountain.

OMG OMG OMG Roxie is back!

After months on hiatus, she's back. As much as I'm smiling right now (and probably will be for the rest of the day), I'm not quite sure how to feel about this.
