I don't like scotch. Not since their New Year's Eve party in 1970-71, when I was 16. Last time I voluntarily drank scotch.....

My Antonia-DFH

This was a 750 ml capped bottle I divided over a couple nights this weekend. The DFH folks don't provide much of a description of the brew on their website except for a history of it. It is a pretty classic imperial pilsner that I thought smelled and tasted like ripe pears, Granny Smith apples and a drop or two of honey with a bit of a floral nose, too. It was a slightly cloudy yellow color with a modest head, an ABV of 7.5% and an estimated IBU of about 20. A plate of fruit would match nicely with this as an appetizer. Some tilapia or grouper with some fruity salsa would make a nice entree with this brew. CB&B has one of these as a trader and I'd love to find out his thoughts. I'll bet he would find this quite delectable, even knowing he doesn't like the pilsner style much.

I opened mine Monday night, still have half the bottle in the fridge for tomorrow or Friday. I'll post thoughts then, but early review is it's way tasty.

I spent a lifetime on Sugar Mountain one winter. Dec. '84 to March '85. Did watch Montana beat Marino at the Green Park Inn in Blowing Rock in January. Coldest night I've ever experienced - temp the next morning was -26F at 10 a.m.

Anyway, they were serving Spaten on draft, both regular and dark. $4 for a 12 oz. draft. Had one of each, one in each hand - no point is standing in that line twice. They tasted about the same, both a bit bitter for my taste. Nothing special in either. And when I said "when all is said and done, I'd rather have had a Bud Light", I got several dirty looks!

Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout-2007 edition

Even better than 3 years ago. Given the time to age, this becomes richer, smoother and more dark chocolate-y. It is an imperial stout, probably the 1st I ever tasted, and that was on draft at the 1st brewers festival I ever attended at the old Omni in downtown Derm about 15 years ago. Mildly viscous and "oily" but ever so smooth on the mouth, it poured a nearly black color, was opaque and still retained a 1-2 fingered head over the hour of sipping it in the wee hours this AM after arriving at the coast. Served at cellar temperature, it had the opportunity to warm to room temperature and was even more flavorful then. I'd guess the IBU to be 60-70 but the ABV of 10.6% hides it well, though the high alcohol content renders it a tad boozey. Fabulous by itself, with a chocolate dessert or, I'd even "sacrifice" 4-6 ounces of a bottle for a beer float once or twice a year ;) . Once again, find yourself a 4 pack (they used to be sold in 6ers), and sip one now, and then each winter for the next 3 years. Better yet, buy two-4 packs and trade a couple of the "extras" with those of like palate. Still, undoubtedly, one of my very favorite brews.
