Hows the job search?

Update: no news on anything. A friend passed my CV to someone at UTMB-Galveston and really talked me up. The UTMB person was supposedly going to call me that day (last Thursday); I haven't heard ANYTHING. Since this is not the first time I heard something along these lines, I'm really starting to think that my boss is torpedoing my job opportunites. Knowing him as I do, it's definitely something he would do.

Now for the big news: a job at Duke has shown up on Simply Hired. Yes, I'm going to be applying for this job and mention that I will be coming to town for a visit. My boss has connections at Duke (we have a Duke person on our external advisory committee), but I don't know if he knows the person to whom I'd be applying. It's posted as a BS/MS job, but the job description reads like everything I've ever done. Rather than being somewhat general or in cancer, though, it's in cardiology. That's not a bad thing - I know a bit about this area and would be more than happy to learn more. Send vibes, please!

Most definitely, devildeac! I've been involved with a cardiology project or two here, but it's been somewhat frustrating because the physician involved in the case has a major case of tunnel vision. He's one of those people that thinks he knows what the answer is supposed to be before even starting, and he's ignoring a lot of good data in the process. He's completely ignoring oxidative stress, for instance.

One or two days and no response is not evidence that your boss is torpedoing things. You've also said that your list of references does NOT include him. I'd suggest talking/emailing your friend to find out what IS available there, and what the timetable is.

Usually, when I pass a CV of mine on to someone, I give a list of references, and a list of people not to contact. Your boss should be completely out of the loop in your job search process. Is there any reason for them to contact your boss?

Where he might be torpedoing is if you DO include him as a reference, and his reputation among the people where you're applying is... well, something less than desired.

I concur with Lavabe on this point. Having been the one conducting the interviews and hiring, I can tell you that so many things happen to delay or deflect the process and few of those interruptions have to do with the applicants.

Have any of you read the book "What Color is Your Parachute?" I highly recommend it for anyone going through the process of looking for a job. It's an extremely enlightening look at modern job searching.The author suggests using a combination of several strategies for finding a job. According to the chapter I finished last night, one of the most effective ways to find a job is through friends or family. In fact, the author contends that "underground" jobs are the key; most positions are not even advertised, and the successful candidate is a promotion from within (least risky, a known commodity) or someone from outside that is known to people who work in the company. Least effective method: applying for advertised positions. Allegedly most of the materials are never even read. That would be consistent with my luck so far - I've gotten calls for the positions that my friend has recommended me for and have heard nothing from the others.

Now for today's story. My friend is a sales rep for Company A. I received an e-mail today on an unrelated topic from a sales rep for Company B (someone I know, and another company I wouldn't mind working for). After answering his first message (why the heck hadn't my boss returned any of his calls or e-mail messages?), I sent a second one with my CV attached. I received a response fairly promptly. As it turns out, the sales rep found out this morning about an opening that I would be well-suited for. He forwarded my CV to the hiring manager, along with "a STRONG recommendation to consider me for a positon and speed up the hiring process." He also mentioned having heard that I had been basically made into a clerk. Isn't it funny how word gets around in professional circles?

This could be a much better deal for me. Although Company A is the one I really want to work for, Company B is not a bad option and has always been #2 on my list. I've always had very good interactions with them (hence the strong recommendation from the sales rep), and I think they have a bit more of a clue what my boss is like. As much as I would like to work for Company A, I suspect that my boss's close relationship with people in this company would make it difficult for them to hire me. That's not the case with Company B. In fact, I've always had a VERY good working relationship with them. This could actually happen, unless they have some internal candidates in mind.

Now for some irony: I applied for several jobs on Company B's website and never heard anything back from them. If this pans out, or if I even get an interview, it definitely lends some credence to the conclusions in "What Color is Your Parachute?"

Along with DD, my dad (cardiologist just retired from Duke but still working there...he will never quit) will be at the game this weekend as well. I'm sure you will have a few brains to pick between the two.

Wow, that was fast. I received an e-mail this morning from a hiring manager at Company B. He is interested in talking with me and wanted to know a convenient time to reach me.
