I strongly concur with the above. And not to worry about not PMing me yet...I'm pretty fried at the moment and won't really be ready to discuss a lot about it until I can get back home and get my wits about me.colchar wrote: I like the fact that, although responses don't have to be, they still can be filled with intelligent information if needed. We have some very intelligent people here with a wide range of knowledge in some very diverse areas. Some are well credentialed. Others have years of experience. Others are just starting out but can teach even those with more experience some new things. You get what I mean - posts don't have to be overly intelligent but, if required, we can take a break from goofing off, impart some knowledge on a wide variety of subjects, and then just as easily go right back to goofing off. Which reminds me - I was supposed to PM Wilson about his research a while ago and completely forgot to get around to that. Sorry bro...I'll get on that this week.

What do you need help with? I have no clue how to write code or anything like that but am more than willing to help out with whatever might need to be done.

Fair enough. Just let me know when you are as it can really help to bounce things off a fellow historian who doesn't work in your own field. Sometimes understanding the process is just as important as understanding the subject.

I think the biggest difference is that we don't take ourselves too seriously. Is it just me, or has "over yonder" develped a rather pompous tone?
Most people say that is it is the intellect which makes a great scientist. They are wrong: it is character.

You and me both. I lurked on DBR for years before discovering the OTB. Some of the posts in the Main Board are the antithesis of what DBR claims it stands for and I was completely intimidated by some of the folks, err moderators there.CellR wrote:I like the fact that every post here doesn't have to be filled with intelligent information. It's nice to be able to ask questions and get answers that aren't condescending. Some of us aren't quite as old or as experienced, so the tips and hints that the older members give out here can be really useful.
I also enjoy PW'ing and goofing off.
I like this place because I don't ever feel like I have to doublecheck a post before I submit. If I make a mistake, or make an ass out of myself I feel like everyone here would give me the benefit of doubt and still like me.

I enjoy the spelling and grammar police discussions. That makes, what, one person? :ugeek:wilson wrote:...that is, after we put down our red pens. ;)Miles wrote: I like this place because I don't ever feel like I have to doublecheck a post before I submit. I like not knowing who the mods are (or, more realistically, not knowing who are they are other than seeing the green, and then forgetting that they are mods).

I like being able to PW.
I also look forward to posting about basketball over here and not getting shot down by some self-proclaimed expert on the subject.

Rhymes with Dumbo is not nearly the basketball expert he thinks he is. I mean sure, he knows the game pretty well, but so do a lot of us. I'm genuinely mystified at how he acquired his reputation over there.

I vote we NEVER break down a beat down of unc to it's numeric values consisting of columns that add up to making no sense. I think the only bunchanumbers we have should be restricted to the nickname one of our founding members.wilson wrote:Slight rant coming...CathyCA wrote:I like being able to PW.

Blow hard long enough and you too can reach the top wilson. Just make sure you're kinder, and gentler.wilson wrote:Slight rant coming...CathyCA wrote:I like being able to PW.

Most, if not all the folks here have been invited as friends. I'd bet we continue to do so.colchar wrote:CameronBornAndBred wrote: I agree with both of those. I do however hope that we continue to grow with fresh faces. There is a very refreshing feeling of freedom here, and I love how we handle matters openly. Any ideas of how we might bring some new blood in?
