That was one heck of a performance, both individually from Ashlon Jackson, but especially as a team, and especially on the defensive end of the floor. K-State is a top-10 offensive team, and we held them more than 25 points below their season average. Granted, the season is very young so the averages may not mean all that much, but as you say, we got sloppy down the stretch, so our true defensive performance was even better than that. We were masterful on defense in this game.CameronBornAndBred wrote: ↑November 25th, 2024, 4:49 pmWow what a performance from Ashlon Jackson! 30 point career high leads the way to help Duke say Seeeeeeeeeeeeeya to #9 Kansas State!
The final was 73-62, but it wasn't that close.![]()

DWBB takes down their second top 10 opponent in three days!
They beat Oklahoma in OT today, 109-99.

That was a very solid win, albeit a bit short on defense. Fortunately, we mostly kept their fast break at bay.CameronBornAndBred wrote: ↑November 27th, 2024, 7:56 pmDWBB takes down their second top 10 opponent in three days!

After knocking off Kansas State and Oklahoma, as well as Columbia in Cameron today, DWBB should be back in the top 10 tomorrow.
It's been a great week for the women, one of the best in a few seasons in fact.

Re: Duke Women's Basketball 2024 (8-1)
Two top ten wins, plus a quality mid-major. Yeah, I'm trying to recall the last time that's happened. It's been a minute. Today's win was more than a little bit sloppy, though. 23 turnovers is kinda ridiculous, even if we had 21 assists and forced them to commit 21 TOs. We are going to need to be a bit more focused on Thursday when we take on South Carolina.CameronBornAndBred wrote: ↑December 1st, 2024, 1:58 pmAfter knocking off Kansas State and Oklahoma, as well as Columbia in Cameron today, DWBB should be back in the top 10 tomorrow.

Re: Duke Women's Basketball 2024 (8-1)
This is a surprisingly good team, honestly. We've lost our best defender, but we seem to be making up for that with increased speed and better offense. I'm liking this group of ladies. I hope we can give South Carolina a very rough time of it on Thursday, and maybe even sneak out a win. I don't think that's likely, but I'd love to see it.CameronBornAndBred wrote: ↑December 2nd, 2024, 12:50 pmBack in the top 10! Ranked eighth this week.![]()

All I want out of Thursday is to not be blown out. I don't think that's going to happen.Phredd3 wrote: ↑December 2nd, 2024, 6:29 pmThis is a surprisingly good team, honestly. I don't like the 9PM tip, that gives our team a lot of time to get nervous. Once we start playing, like after 5 minutes or so, we seem to settle, but whoboy, a disaster can happen in that first 5 minutes if we start like we have a tendency for.

Huge 9PM game tonight vs South Carolina in Columbia. It's hard to know what to expect, I just know we can't start off badly and expect to recover like have in other games.
We'll be chatting in Section 21.

Re: Duke Women's Basketball 2024 (8-1)
So how do you feel about the result? We beat the spread, and put on a heck of a comeback to at least give them a scare and make them put their starters back in. On the other hand, our win chance this game was never much higher than about 5% for the entire final quarter. I'm curious if you felt you got "all you wanted" out of Thursday's game.CameronBornAndBred wrote: ↑December 2nd, 2024, 6:55 pmAll I want out of Thursday is to not be blown out. Re: Duke Women's Basketball 2024 (8-1)
We started EXACTLY the way I dreaded. And I'm backed up on that by Kara's own "we couldn't catch up" comments. I turned it off after the first half, knowing the final score would likely be "respectable" but still a loss. The final score didn't justify that it was not a good loss, because it wasn't. We CAN'T start off like that, as we so often do, and expect to have any success in the post season.Phredd3 wrote: ↑December 7th, 2024, 2:16 pmSo how do you feel about the result?CameronBornAndBred wrote: ↑December 2nd, 2024, 6:55 pmAll I want out of Thursday is to not be blown out. We have a chance of catching up and winning against a good team, we don't have a sliver against an elite squad.

Re: Duke Women's Basketball 2024 (8-1)
I completely agree with that, by the way, and it was really frustrating to see us unable to buy a bucket in the early going against VaTech. The good news was that they couldn't, either, despite a number of Duke defensive lapses. We found the range a bit later in the quarter, so we ended up the first with a substantial lead. To start the second half, they made us pay for defensive lapses, but by thenwe had truly found our offense, so we played them even in that frame, and although I didn't see it, the numbers suggest we cleaned it up some in the final period.CameronBornAndBred wrote: ↑December 7th, 2024, 3:49 pmThe final score didn't justify that it was not a good loss, because it wasn't. It was a good start to the conference season, but there is plenty of work yet to be done if we're truly going to compete in March. Finals are this week, so we won't see the team again until the 18th against Wofford.

DWBB makes it to double digits in the victory column, soundly beating Wofford at home tonight. Unlike the men, they showed no rust in their return from exams.

Re: Duke Women's Basketball 2024 (12-4, 3-1 ACC)
Duke loses in OT. At one point in the third quarter, we were down by 16 points. That killed us, even though we eventually came back and even took the lead. It's so hard to recover against a quality defense when you get in a hole like that.

DWBB heads back to Durham from Charlottesville with an ACC win, but whoboy, it was bad. Took us until the last 5 minutes to finally get a lead.
Lots to work on, especially shooting. (And especially layups, as seemingly always.)

This seemed to be the first couple games where the dreaded "bunny bug" really plagued us. We'll need to do better tomorrow. Cal is a good team.CameronBornAndBred wrote: ↑January 12th, 2025, 1:58 pmDWBB heads back to Durham from Charlottesville with an ACC win, but whoboy, it was bad.
