If our resident commentator Lavabe isn't going to be available for race commentary this season I think we're going to have to do it by committee as I don't get to watch too many races due to other commitments so can't provide much commentary. If Lavabe is around though, I nominate him based on the strength of his past performance (some weeks logging in here and reading his updates is the only way I even have of following a race!).

I'll be able to commentate on a few of them.

FWIW, commentating helps raise the post count. ;)

This year's Daytona 500 pole is:
DANICA PATRICK

She won qualifying today.
Jeff Gordon will also be in the front row.
After that, who knows what will happen, as that depends on the duels this week.

OMG.

I saw yesterday that she was fastest in practice, but am still absolutely stunned. :-o

I was looking for info on how often the pole winner wins the full race but can't get past all the headlines on Danica winning the pole.

I'm looking forward to seeing Danica on the pole.

Somehow I feel like this comment would be equally fitting on the EJ's cock page.

I liked Gordon's response to being in the front row next to Danica. "I guess I was the fastest guy out there." ;)
My guess is that NASCAR is THRILLED that Danica got the pole.

If it will revive their sagging ratings...

NASCAR isn't what it used to be. With racetracks all over the USA now. I realize it is a sport and all about the money. I miss Rockingham, Wilkesboro, etc. When Richard Petty was close to retirement, I started following Jeff Gordan. My Dad took me to races when I was young, and taught me about the sport.

I must admit, I haven't followed so closely, the last few years. The Daytona 500 would be on the same time as a Duke Men's Basketball game (generally an Away game).

Great, that Danica won the pole!!!! And that Women can compete in "Male Dominated Industry". The 500 is a long and tiring race. Danica may not have the endurance it takes to finish near the top! Also, let's hope there is not a Big Wreck that takes out several cars.

How much does it cost to go to the Races now? I haven't been in over 10 years.

GO DANICA!!!! GO JEFF 24!

Unfortunately, it's no Madagascar for me this year. I could not get an inhouse grant done in time, so I will be in the US this summer. X(

On the other hand, I guess I'll be able to commentate and to see races a little more than I had planned. :D

The Nationwide race today at Daytona was marred by two BIG ONE type crashes in the last 5 laps. The first one involved 11 cars, and a driver was sent to hospital for observation.

The second BIG ONE was on the last two turns. I think only 6 or 7 cars survived relatively unscathed. Smoke wound up winning, being pushed by Hornish. They were ahead of the action. The crash was horrendous, sending one car airborne, shredding off the front of the car, sending debris over & through the barrier. Although no drivers were injured, 28 fans were treated. 14 of these fans went to the hospital, two of whom were in critical condition. According to ESPN (at 830PM), a 14-yr-old boy was in critical condition, but not life-threatening condition. An adult is in surgery with life-threatening head trauma.

I hope they all survive. Truly tragic. :wizard: :YMPRAY:

The wreck was horrible. I'm praying and vibing for the people who are hurt. Especially for the 14 year old and the others in critical condition. :YMPRAY: :YMPRAY: :YMPRAY: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

Just saw a report that the two who were in critical condition are now stable... critical, but stable.:ymapplause:

Looks like repairs have been made to the track.

I think they'll have a critical review of everything over the next month. I do expect some changes for the second Daytona race of the year. Beats me what they could do... larger catch fence? Lower speed limits? Hard to figure out, as yesterday's crash was with the Nationwide cars.

Fox reports that these two fans will be kept under observation for the next 48 hours. It sure sounds like good news compared with what occurred yesterday. :wizard:
