They just phoned to say that everything went well. Lucky is waking up and being kept comfortable. Once again, CTN vibes do their job!
Thanks guys.

If Willie could jump, he'd be sure to jump for joy at Lucky's good news. Instead, he'll just do what he does best...
wait to go for a ride.

Lucky is home, but it may be a while before things smooth out a bit. He doesn't do well on pain meds and yet can't really do without them. He's pretty confused and worried. So is the OP. We're just trying to keep them both as comfy and quiet as possible. Neither of them like this "sling walking" business. I assume we'll be tucking them in together in the OP's study tonight. The good news is that the OP will temporarily get his recliner back. It's off limits for the recuperating Luckster.

The sling walking is tough with a big dog. Depending on Lucky's normal energy level keeping him out of trouble can be a challenge when he starts to feel better (most the agility dogs I know who had that procedure were like my Dylan - uber high drive high energy) What is the problem with the pain meds? I am glad he is home. It will take another day or so for the anasthetic to clear out of his system...he should be more normal by this time tomorrow. As with people, home is the best medicine. Love him well and follow Dr orders and he'll be reclaiming the recliner in no time. Healing vibes for Lucky :O3 :wizard: :O3 :O3 :wizard: :O3 :O3 :wizard: :O3 :O3 :wizard: :O3

Thanks, Windsor. As per the pain meds. This was the case when we brought him home from his other surgery. When he's on this junk, he seems a little freaked out and disoriented. Last time he would stand in the middle of the room and look lost and anxious and just whine continuously. Wouldn't lie down or cooperate in any logical way. As soon as we just took him off, he was more like himself. I think his mind just gets muddled or something. It's not as bad this time. We've not given him the full dosages.

I'm just taking provisions to the two of them back there in the study and letting them have their down time. The less traffic the better. Tomorrow will probably be better; you're right. They've both had a lot of adjustments to make. Bless their hearts.

It's got to be hard for all of you, especially Lucky. Is the vet OK for him to take aspirin?

I've seen that reaction to medication before. When a human who has taken a heavy duty (read:narcotic) pain killer feels 'stoned' we understand why...dogs of course do not. They just know they are not 'right' and can't wrap their brains around why. They can be pretty pathetic, poor things.

While dogs can take aspirin in short cycles it probably isn't the best course for post operative pain like this. Usefull tidbit to anyone giving a dog aspirin...use the flavored low dose/childrens variety. Don't bother with the enteric coated variety, as they are useless on dogs. In other news never EVER give a dog tylenol. Ever. Never.

A little 'lab humor' for Lucky today:

Hope he doesn't feel too much like a 'Meth Lab'.

The yellow lab pictured above looks a LOT like the dog I got while a senior at Duke when I moved off campus 2nd semester senior year and lived at Duke Manor. Named her Babe! Pink nose, golden ears. Yup, that's her! When we got her from a foster family in Durham, she wouldn't "house break". Turned out she had a plumbing problem - she "leaked" when she was asleep. When I took her home to Ft. Lauderdale at the end of the semester, our neighbor, a vet, gave her a steroid shot in her hip, thinking, hoping, it would cure her helping to develop her bladder muscles. If it didn't, we'd have to find an "outdoor home" for Babe. Fortunately for both of us, it did! ~10 years later, Babe developed a large tumor on that hip. She lived with it for over a year before the inevitable became necessary.

Funny!!! I guess there are all kinds of "highs". Lucky is more of a sad eyed drunk! We're doing better today. He's just suffering the indignation of the Elizabethan collar. I'm sure he's thinking doggie "bad words"! Bless his heart.

Oh yes, the Cone Of Shame. My guys won't wear them...they all know how to turn them inside out by finding a corner of a wall or door frame to push it against. I put them in T-shirts (safety pinned around the tail like diaper) instead.

Glad he's doing better today. How is OP holding up?

How is Lucky?

I'm late to the party, but all 4 of us here wish healing vibes to Lucky, and hugs to Ima and the OP.

So far so good. The OP sleeps in his recliner (only temporarily reclaimed since the dog isn't allowed to jump into it for now) back there in the study with him every night. Inseparable. We're a week out from surgery. Staples should come out in a day or so.

Having nursed the OP through several ACL surgeries, knee and hip replacements, I can tell you the dog is far less trouble!

Thanks for checking on us.

Love, Ima
PS DukeRah has HER ACL repair next week. Are we having fun yet?
