Re: The Job Search Thread
He told you to look for a job, didn't he? Is he looking for someone to replace you or looking to hire for other positions, or both? If the answers to questions 1 and 2A are yes, posting your CV shouldn't come as a surprise to him, unless he's a total moron as well as a schmuck.

Thanks, Ozzie! I had just about decided to post my CV, and your answer cements my decision. And, I think the answer is "both." He can interview people to replace me, but I can't go interview for jobs myself because I have to stay behind and cover for the person that's going to the conference in my place. Schmuck.

AD, I'm with Ozzie and CathyCA here. If he sees your CV, what can he do? Fire you?

I'm also in the post it camp. It would be funny to put it up with a fake name to see if he contacts you. (OK, that wouldn't be professional and I know you wouldn't do it but I can picture his face when he figured it out.) He is truly a schmuck. I'm adding my pointy toed shin kicks, and higher kicks, his way.

Personally, I think it would be humorous for him to search the CVs to find qualified people to interview and stumble upon mine.

Re: The Job Search Thread
Progress to date: updated CV posted on professional society website: check. Updated LinkedIn profile: check.
Especially after yesterday's discovery, this weekend will be devoted to job applications. A friend sent me a link yesterday to a position at the Univ of Wisconsin; the position is quite similar to the one I have here. In fact, I think I'm EXTREMELY well-qualified for the job. A similar position was posted on my professional society website for a position in Tampa. Cover letters and CV are going out before the weekend is up. I also found a few intriguing positions posted on LinkedIn, one of which is at Eli-Lilly in Indianapolis.
A question: are any of you on LinkedIn? If so, do you see any benefit to upgrading to a Job Searcher Premium membership?

I'm on LinkedIn, but I've never used it for a job search. It's more like another social media site for me.ArkieDukie wrote:Progress to date: updated CV posted on professional society website: check. Updated LinkedIn profile: check.

If you upgrade to the Job Searcher Premium membership, you can deduct that expense from your 2011 income taxes. My .

Re: The Job Search Thread
I just submitted my first online application, for a Field Applications Specialist with an instrument manufacturing company. I think I could be good at this; it combines my teaching skills with my technical skills. Since I have a fairly broad base of experience in my field, I think I'd be pretty good at this.
Another opportunity has presented itself as well. Lavabe sent me information for a couple of Lecturer positions (Coastal Carolina and App State; the latter looks like a good fit for me). I've been waffling a bit on what to do. I've been telling friends about my situation, and I heard back from one of them this morning. She was preparing to head for Emerald Isle with a friend; that friend is an adjunct faculty member at App State. My friend asked me if I was interested in getting back into teaching at App State! Keep in mind this was a cold mention - she had no idea that I was already looking at the App State position. Is it a sign?

App State has a lot going for it and tends to be overlooked and undervalued by the uninformed. They've got a great football tradition there, but be prepared for very cold night games! You'd be able to get in some snow skiing and snowboarding if you like that sort of thing. Going to Duke football games becomes a distinct possibility ..... at least in geographic terms.ArkieDukie wrote:I just submitted my first online application, for a Field Applications Specialist with an instrument manufacturing company. Don't overlook the value of the NC State Retirement System for your future; it's mandatory for fulltime employees and offers some of the best and most reliable benefits for retirees you'll find anywhere. You may not be thinking about retirement now, but it's important to plan ahead!
You'll also be able to bank at the State Employees Credit Union.... lower rates, fewer fees, outstanding service.
Let me know if you want more information about these benefits.

App State is a great school and Boone and the surrounding area is beautiful. My daughter is an Appy grad and lives 10 miles away. Best of all, you're only ~150 miles and less than 3 hours drive away from Brunchgates, Wallace Wade Stadium and Cameron Indoor Stadium! If those thing might be important to you, that is... ;)

Thanks, DitBD! I admit, I would've overlooked it as well. However, after reading their website, I'm quite impressed. It will be interesting to see how all this plays out.Devil in the Blue Dress wrote:App State has a lot going for it and tends to be overlooked and undervalued by the uninformed. The advantage of a teaching position is that it is out of my boss's sphere of influence...

Happy Appy is a good university! Just a local long distance drive to Duke! Good Football, and the Basketball team is Coached by Jeff Capel's Brother, Jason Capel (he went to the baby boy blue school).

And, up there you can choose to stay either, 1) close to a lot of civilization and culture, or...2) not too far away, you can be so far back into the woods that even the Presbyterians there are known to 'handle snakes'.ArkieDukie wrote:Don't think that hasn't crossed my mind, Ozzie.OZZIE4DUKE wrote:App State is a great school and Boone and the surrounding area is beautiful. Re: The Job Search Thread
Truth be told, when I was looking a few years ago, App opened up a position in Anthropology, but it was cultural. A close cultural colleague was doing the searches with me and asked me about App. I raved about it, but he wound up not doing it, even though it was a GREAT fit for him. My colleague wound up getting a position elsewhere, but he kills himself over why he didn't go for App.DevilWearsPrada2.0 wrote:ArkieDukie wrote:Don't think that hasn't crossed my mind, Ozzie.OZZIE4DUKE wrote:App State is a great school and Boone and the surrounding area is beautiful. Regional state universities like App are really nice, but I just hope that it (or Coastal Carolina) works for Arkie for now. Hopefully a tenure stream position opens up somewhere like it in the fall.
Fingers crossed for Arkie!!

We love App around our house. DukeRah attended three schools (the one on the dark side included) and App was by FAR the best! Native's brother has been treated well up there. The OP says they actually reward teaching. Isn't that refreshing? Wherever you end up, the place will be the better for it!! Good luck, hon.
