Gaetz was the only one to vote for his nominee, lol. (I think that's his third or fourth vote for him so far, but this was the first that he put his name in the hat before the voting started.)

Gaetz has nominated Trump. BWAHAHAHAHA =)) =))
I suggested that upthread. Hopefully he didn't get the idea from me. So which of you is Trump? Out yourself now!

The question is whether all of these concessions McCarthy is supposed to be making to the far right alienate any of those at the other extreme. Unfortunately I don't think that will be the case but who knows.

Adjourned until tomorrow. McCarthy must be handing out more presents than Santa Claus to still be in it.
His negotiating skills seem to be "I'll give you whatever you want".

I once asked a defense lawyer how he was going to resolve a really bad case. His response: “i’m gonna shove money in the plaintiffs’ pocket until they cry ‘Uncle’!”

Not sure why that story comes to mind here.

For whatever reason, that caught me just right this morning.

The Congressional shit show continues, but McCarthy is turning the tide for some voters. So far, nine of the twenty flipped their votes.

But while the 12th vote is still technically pending, a picture is worth a thousand words:

It was all wrapped up....'til it wasn't.

Matt Gaetz does the ultimate grandstand, and violence comes close to breaking out on the floor. (On Jan 6th, no less.)

On to round 15.

Going into the 15th, all the body language implies that Gaetz has finally fully flipped.

Welcome to the Ultra Right Wing led Congress, "guided" by the weakest Speaker in recent history.

Does anyone know if any supposed concessions were reduced to writing? Even if they were, is there anything that binds him to stick to them? Because I wouldn't trust Kevin McCarthy to keep his word any longer than it took for the 222nd Republican vote to be cast.

My understanding is that it was reduced to writing. But it’s also some stuff that KM and the House cannot do unilaterally. Plus, there’s no guarantee that Km can deliver the votes of others on stuff.

Georgia special grand jury has completed its work.

Hearing 1/24 as to whether their findings should be made public.

If it includes recommendations for indictments, up to the Fulton County DA to pursue in front of normal grand jury.

Some helpful info on the expected grand jury timeline.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney, in an order announcing the completion of the special grand jury's work, scheduled a January 24 hearing to decide whether the report should be made public.

The jurors who wrote the report recommended that it should be, McBurney wrote.
If Willis convenes another grand jury to weigh bringing indictments — as she is widely expected to do — that grand jury would move relatively quickly. It would sit for up to two months, and would already have all the evidence and witness transcripts gathered by the special grand jury in front of them.

If that other grand jury does decide to bring criminal charges against Trump, he would be required to appear in court in Atlanta for his arraignment hearing.

Only in the world of the legal system "up to two months" moving "relatively quickly".

I do not understand why there are not more judges. The legal system is so backed up. I know some people don't like government spending but this would help, and in the case of those who are locked up awaiting trial, it would reduce costs on that end. Of course, this policy should be implemented with a Democrat in charge so they can make all of the appointments :D

Though it is moving forward relatively slowly, I am glad this is finally hopefully making some progress.

Crazy question, but is the judicial system still backed up from the Mitch McConnell pettiness of refusing to even bring Obama’s judicial nominees to the floor for a vote?

I don’t think so. Backups are mainly in state courts due to (1) heavy criminal dockets which get priority; (2) funding/staffing issues; and (3) no jury trials during COVID.

At least that’s how it seems in my part of the world; others may have different experiences.

Biden's own classified document stash keeps getting bigger, with them now being found in his house. Not in some closet, either, but his fucking garage. WTG! X(

I can hear Trump laughing in Florida from New Bern.
