Miami did something that unc will refuse to do, they have self imposed a bowl ban for this season. This is after they are bowl eligible, by the way. From Heather Dinich's blog...
“The current players on our team have been reinstated and have paid their debt,” Golden said. “Now, as a team and a program, we feel like we’re paying our debt and we feel like we have a chance to put these issues behind us. That’s why I feel it’s the right decision at this time.”

“Clearly this is something we have to do now to move the program forward in the future,” he said.

The heels outta look at this as something they should think about, but if they don't it will be interesting to see if the NCAA looks at Miami's decision with kindness later, and if they are less kind to unc. Miami's infractions are larger, and warrant serious penalties...but carolina's infractions also warrant a bowl ban, IMO. This will be an interesting comparison when the punishments are meeted out.

A summer class at UNC Chapel Hill that lacked any instruction was enrolled exclusively with football players – and it landed on the school calendar just days before the semester started, university records show.
The records show that in the summer of 2011, 19 students enrolled in AFAM 280: Blacks in North Carolina, 18 of them players on the football team, the other a former player. They also show that academic advisers assigned to athletes helped the players enroll in the class, which is the subject of a criminal investigation.
The advisers also knew that there would be no instruction.

Well, there go the claims of what a fine academic institution it is. Ok, ok, maybe not completely. But the shortcuts they are willing to take leave them not much better off than an average SEC school when it comes to treatment of athletes.

Did I miss this sometime in the past, and am just now catching up?

http://www.newsobserver.com/2012/07/20/ ... uring.html

They are giving Hakeem Nicks the Roger Maris treatment.

UNC will note Nicks’ career and single-season records with an asterisk in media guides and other university publications as part of sanctions imposed by the NCAA in March. Nicks’ achievements will be flagged with the wording that his “participation later vacated due to NCAA penalty.”

You have to admire their timing. Whenever criticism is brought to bear on them, they can self-righteously say, "Well, at least John Blake wasn't taking little boys into our showers."

Thank goodness Unc isn't like Penn state!!!! That would be horrible . As much as I dislike Unc athletics and obnoxious fans, I wouldn't wish a Penn state scandal on them.

I wouldn't want that kind of negative association with the ACC.

But UNC still stands for

UNIVERSITY OF NON COMPLIANCE!!!

In a report released Thursday, a faculty subcommittee at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that Tar Heel athletes told interviewers that they were directed to classes in the African and Afro-American Studies Department by staffers in the Academic Support Program for Student Athletes.
Further interviews suggested that athletic advisers were discouraged from contacting faculty to discuss courses offered and were instead guided to the associate directors at the Loudermilk Center – those whose salaries are paid by the athletics department.
The findings also present a continued sense of secrecy coming out of the athletics department and the subcommittee’s report calls for more transparency throughout the university.

After Penn State, it is not the best time for reports to be coming out highlighting "secrecy" within your athletic department.

Former Gov Martin to aid in the investigation of the Unc Academic scandal. 54 bogus classes. Altered Transcripts. The entire Africian Studies department under the magnifying glass.

It's getting uglier and uglier. And for folks who start off wearing that shade of blue, that's impressive!

In other news, the NCAA proved they suck by saying on Friday that unc basically did nothing wrong academically.
“The NCAA concludes no violations in UNC academic scandal,” tweeted Stewart Mandel, a college football writer for Sports Illustrated’s website. “This actually happened.”
