Nope. =(( The mother board has a bad capacitor - the cap is swollen. Don't know if this actually failed or is waiting to fail, but it rules out fixing whatever else might be wrong, like the power supply. I am shopping, and trying to decide between staying with XP or going with Vista home premium. Both my printers have Vista drivers available, so it becomes a matter of choice, not necessity.
I don't know what motherboard yours was, but bad caps were a huge problem up to about 2 years ago. We still get them every now and then, I'm replacing one tomorrow in fact. But 4-5 years ago we were haunted by them. Even Machspeed, who warranteed their boards for life, gave in and said no more. Apparently, some guy bought a ton of capacitors for dirt cheap and distributed them to everyone, for cheap. Now we all know why, but not back then. When I open a case nowadays, caps are the first thing I look at. I'm almost bummed if I have a problem PC and the board looks good. But then I realize I actually have to figure something out and am happy. Stay with XP Ozzie, if anything buy a blank drive and I'll get you the OS.
The Asus board was installed in July 2004, so I think I got my money's worth out of it. I've got an OEM copy of XP w/SP2 that I can install if I go that way. Why do you recommend XP?

It took me until senior year to figure out that 'Study Hard' poster that all the guys had in their rooms.

I get it during the final episode. I've no interest in watching people suffer through exercise, but I think the transformations at the end of the season are pretty phenomenal and inspiring.

CameronBornAndBred wrote:You can download tools from the harddrive manufacturer for free on their websites. Usually one of the utilities is a low level format option, which rewrites over the entire drive with 1's and 0's. This is more destructive than just a format (which doesn't delete anything), as in all the data that's on it now is overwritten with new info.
Thanks. My only question is, will this work on a computer I can't even get to start up in safe mode? What do I do, download it with a different computer, burn it to a cd and put it in the disk drive as soon as I hit power on the old unit?

That's the thing about working at Harvard (and having a Harvard physics professor for a husband), you meet really smart people all the time. In the smarty pants department, it takes a lot to impress me.

In the golf department however, anybody who can shoot par, on any hole, impresses me. One thing I seem to be unable to do is hit a golf ball. I can putt fairly well but I can't hit a drive to save my life, at least not properly.
