They are doing what they have to do. Saturday people will bitch because it was much ado about nothing...but better to be ready than to be late. From what I see, I really don't think we will get much.

Bordering on a '5'!!!!!!!
GET THE HELL OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I fear for your safety.
We have a weak high pressure here in the piedmont with a cold front on the way in for the weekend, but it's not enough to hold back this MONSTER.
TS winds and heavy rains are/can be expected as far inland as to affect all those east of I-95.

Err on the side of caution, ya'll!

Sending positive vibes to our coastal friends and our coast!
Hubby is coming home today after battening down the hatches at our river house in Belhaven (about 60 miles west-northwest of Hatteras). I know many folks here in Raleigh who have been east this week to shore up their own properties or help friends get ready. Let's hope it's all for naught! All you eastern CTNers please be careful!

Good thing I'm a mile or two west of I-95... :D

This morning Earl has max winds at 145, and Greg Fishel says the eye should pass ~30 miles east of the Outer Banks about 2 a.m. tonight/tomorrow morning, plenty close enough to cause significant damage to them :(

I'm deciding today after the 2pm update if I'll be spending the night in Durham or at home.

If you go to Durham today, will you go home tomorrow to check out what's hopefully left and undamaged, or wait until after the football game on Saturday/Sunday to go home?

I'm just glad we went to the OBX last week. :))

OK, seriously, I hope Earl continues to turn to the north, and everybody comes out of this OK. Thinking of you guys in NC.

I was watching The Weather Channel last night and Jim Cantore (who I do like), referred to the Outer Banks as "out here at the 'ol OBX." He kind of said it in a winky, snappy, "How ya doin'!" way. It was very cheesy.

I had never heard of it called the OBX before. Makes sense though.

-EarlJam

P.S. By the way, not saying the use of OBX is cheesy, just the way Cantore specifically used it last night.

There are bunches of OBX ovals on the backs of cars, very similar to our GTHC ovals! :9f: :9f: :9f:

And Stephanie Abrams? She may be pretty, with a great body, but she is a total dingbat.

This morning she was all peppy while turning to some crew on the beach. Smiling and bouncy, she asked them, "Y'all getting things ready here on the beach!?" (or something like that). Their reaction was priceless. They all looked at her without any reaction and just kept walking, saying nothing. They had work to do.

She turns back to the camera all peppy and bouncy, smiling, and says, "They're getting things all prepared down here!"

Right, it's a convenient shorthand. Saying it out loud, though, I dunno; it's the same number of syllables, so it doesn't save any effort. The TV coverage of storms can be so stupid sometimes. They gotta fill airtime, so they send someone to stand on the beach and go, "THE WIND IS REALLY BLOWING RIGHT NOW!" Well no shit, Sherlock, it's a hurricane.

The Bad News (latest from National Weather Service)...

HURRICANE EARL DISCUSSION NUMBER 33
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL AL072010
1100 AM EDT THU SEP 02 2010

THERE HAS BEEN NO SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN THE STRUCTURE OF EARL
DURING THE PAST FEW HOURS. HOWEVER..MICROWAVE INAGERY SUGGEST THAT
AN EYEWALL REPLACEMENT COULD OCCUR SOON...IN WHICH CASE THE WIND
FIELD WOULD BECOME LARGER.

The GOOD News...

AS ANTICIPATED...EARL HAS BEGUN TO MOVE NORTHWARD OR 355 DEGREES AT
16 KNOTS. SINCE THE STEERING PATTERN HAS NOT CHANGED...EARL IS
FORECAST TO CONTINUE NORTHWARD TODAY. IN ABOUT 24 HOURS...THE
HURRICANE SHOULD BE ENCOUNTERING THE BASE OF THE MID-LATITUDE
WESTERLIES AND EARL SHOULD THEN TURN MORE TOWARD THE NORTH-NORTHEAST
AND NORTHEAST WITH AN INCREASE IN FORWARD SPEED.

In about 12 hours, or less, I, Earl, am going to blow everyone on the Outer Banks.

Just something to consider when thinking of staying or going. ;)

I'm going to Durham for the Blue Devil Club luncheon tomorrow. I'm actually meeting TNT at 11 a.m. at the Sheetz near RDU to give him his parking pass. Group meeting? Or is that later than you would leave to go back?
