If out of Laundry Detergent, What do You use as Substitute?

I've used several things. I'm out now, and need to know!

There is probably enough residual detergent left in your clothes and the washer to get by using just water for one or two loads. You might not get grass stains out, but "normal" dirt will probably come out just fine. If you look in the tub during the first wash cycle, you'll probably see some suds on top even without using any detergent.

A Sears repair man (not the same one referred to in the jokes I posted a few minutes ago) suggested I use about half the detergent that's recommended on the bottle. Unless you have hard water, you don't need that much to clean your clothes.

I went with dishwashing detergent.
I considered the horse blood thing, yet decided against it, believing it may indicate some sort of wierd religion connection.

You ran out of laundry detergent?

Go to the next door neighbor's house. Ask if you can borrow a cup of laundry detergent.

Or, you could use baking soda. It will take the odors out of your clothes.

:9f:

(Or you could go to the store and buy some more laundry detergent.)

I just keep digging further and further into the back of the closet to find older, rattier clothes to wear instead.

Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Liquid Soap.
That's also the the only soap I take camping. I clean dishes with it, shampoo, bath and brush my teeth it too. One ounce can last through a weekend easy.

That's my grandson's favorite soap. We keep some in the outside shower at the lake. Very invigorating when in your birthday suit outside. But, it can sure clean out your sinuses used indoors!!!

I would caution EJ not to use but a spoonful or so in his washer. The suds may be overwhelming!
