Free Antivirus Recommendations?

Post by colchar » February 20th, 2011, 7:29 pm

I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials on my system and quite liked it but have been having problems recently getting the program to upgrade successfully. I keep getting errors claiming the upgrade can't be completed and even downloading and installing from scratch doesn't work. I was considering calling Microsoft to get help with this but, apparently, despite this being a well known and widespread problem with their software, they make the user jump through all kinds of hoops before they will provide any help and I will not jump through hoops when the problem is with their product.

So, because of that, I am now looking for a good free antivirus program and was wondering what people would recommend? I have tried AVG in the past and had problems with it so I would prefer not to use it again but I am open to all other suggestions.

This is a good AV program, free, but it doesn't have as many bells and whistles that AVG or Microsoft have.

It is only an Anti-virus program, so for Malware protection, I would have Windows Defender running in conjunction with this. Also, download Malwarebytes from http://www.malwarebytes.org and run that weekly - quick scan - and you should be okay.

I have had quite a few customers that have had issues with Microsoft Security Essentials lately and we have had them switch to AVG or Avast. AVG has improved quite a bit from before, so you may want to give that another go too.

If you have any issues, send me a PM or just answer on here and I'll help for the benefit of all.
